Gira Sarabhai (Gira ben to most of us) was the solar, the moon, a shining star, and continues to be so even after leaving her physique on July 15, 2021, at a ripe age of 97. For the place else would she be, however within the distant firmament full of sunshine. Her’s was a life devoted in utter naturalness and resoluteness to artwork and design and structure, and it was inherent in her to go on that legacy to the world.
My encounter with Gira ben in 2017 left me with a way of enjoyment in self-discovery. Her persona opened up avenues of self-expression for me. She offered this to numerous others, too. She did divulge to me a really heat and loving character throughout my temporary engagement along with her, which started a number of years in the past.
I used to be shocked that she selected me to inaugurate her beloved Shanti Sadan (centuries-old ancestral house) with an exhibit of textiles in 2018. She gave me a carte blanche to undertaking “Many Moons” in the best way I envisioned this exhibition. She was sure that it was primarily the youthful lot who would come to see this show and study from it. Gira Ben persuaded me to have workshops with individuals who got here into this house, primarily college students. And so, I found her generosity, her loving nature and even her child-like freshness.

She gave to the world the Nationwide Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, the place I too was educated in Textiles Design, from 1980 to 1983. The Calico Museum continues to encourage with its superb vibrations because of its very setting and, in fact, its extraordinary textiles and sculptures.
She had a watch for finding and recognising magnificence and relevance in materials in addition to non-material issues. I shall eternally be in awe of these piercing and figuring out eyes; I’ll miss the heat and belief of these very eyes for occasions to come back.
