Some MLAs simply fill attendance to get allowance: Bengal speaker on standing committee conferences

West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee expressed displeasure over legislators not attending conferences of the meeting standing committees.

Banerjee, who had earlier criticised the MLAs for not being common when the Home is in session, stated he has seen that some legislators signal the attendance sheet of the standing committee conferences to avail the allowances however don’t attend it.

“That is unacceptable… The standing committee conferences are held to debate and deliberate vital points and insurance policies. However this isn’t being executed. I request all legislators to attend these conferences,” he stated on Thursday.

In line with the norms of the meeting, a legislator is allotted membership in two committees — a departmental standing committee and a committee of the Home.

Reacting to the speaker’s remark, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay stated it’s the opposition BJP MLAs who don’t attend such conferences and chief of opposition Suvendu Adhikari should look into it.

“Sure, legislators not attending conferences have been a difficulty. However for the previous few classes, the attendance within the treasury benches and likewise within the standing committee conferences have improved,” he stated.

BJP chief whip Manoj Tigga stated a lot of the MLAs of his social gathering have been common in attending conferences of the standing committees.

“I’m not conscious if our MLAs are irregular. However it’s good if each MLAs often attend standing committee conferences,” he added.
