‘Our Neighbor Reached Moon But We…’: Nawaz Sharif Blames Military For Pakistan’s Woes, Hails India | world news
New Delhi: Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has accused the military establishment of ruining the country’s economy and democracy, while praising India’s achievements in space and development. Sharif, who is eyeing a record fourth term as prime minister, said that Pakistan’s miseries were not caused by India, the US or Afghanistan, but by its own actions. “Our neighbors have reached the moon, we haven’t even stood up on the ground so far” says Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif praising India’s rise while pointing to his country’s economic crisis.
“We shot ourselves in our own foot…they (a reference to the military) rigged the 2018 polls and imposed a selected (government) on this nation that led to the sufferings of the people and downfall of the economy,” Sharif said during a conversation with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket aspirants here.
He also criticized the judges for supporting the military dictators and ousting him from power three times in 1993, 1999 and 2017. “The judges garland them (military dictators) and legitimize their rule when they break the Constitution. When it comes to a prime minister the judges stamp his ouster. The judges also approve the act of dissolution of the parliament…why?” he asked.
Sharif, who returned from a four-year-long self-imposed exile in London in October, is the only Pakistani politician who became the prime minister of the coup-prone country for a record three times. He said that he was declared a hijacker in 1999 and removed from power in 2017 for not taking salary from his son.
“They (military establishment) made this decision as they wanted to bring their selected man into power,” he said, referring to his arch-rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo Imran Khan. Sharif also blamed the military establishment of 2014-17 for coercing the senior judges to remove him from power.
“They (a reference to the military establishment) visited the residences of senior judges and threatened them. They achieved the required court verdicts against me through coercion,” he said. Sharif has been acquitted in three corruption cases in the last week. He was sentenced to ten years in jail in July 2018 in the Avenfield graft case.
Sharif contrasted Pakistan’s situation with India’s progress, saying that “our neighbors have reached the moon, we haven’t even stood up on the ground so far”. He praised India’s rise in space and development, saying that Pakistan should learn from its neighbour.

Fighting Second World War To Thwarting Naga Insurgents: The Story Of Assam Rifles Warrior Havildar Mering Ao |
In a remarkable encounter, Lieutenant General PC Nair, Director General of Assam Rifles, had the privilege of meeting a true hero, Havildar Mering Ao, who not only fought valiantly in the Second World War but also played a crucial role in countering Naga insurgents, earning him a prestigious gallantry award. Lt Gen PC Nair recently visited 12 Assam Rifles in Mokokchung on December 3, 2023, where he had the opportunity to meet this living legend and gain insights into his extraordinary life.
Born in 1920 in Sungratsu village, Mokokchung district, Havildar Mering Ao had a childhood dream of donning the uniform, Lieutenant General PC Nair said in a Facebook post. His dream came true in 1940 when he was enlisted as a soldier in 3 Assam Rifles during a recruitment rally in Mokokchung. His battalion became part of the famed ‘V’ Force in Burma during World War-II, tasked with providing early warning, undertaking guerrilla activities, and operating behind Japanese lines.
“Hav Mering Ao’s exemplary service saw him excel in intelligence work, with his platoon successfully carrying out reconnaissance of Japanese defensive locations in Burma,” Lieutenant General PC Nair said on Facebook. His bravery continued in the Battle of Kohima alongside 1st Punjab Regiment, where his platoon inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese. Apart from his military prowess, he was also an accomplished athlete, winning events at the Assam Rifles Meet in 1949 and participating in the National athletics competition.
Post World War-II, Havildar Mering Ao actively participated in operations against Naga militants in the 50s and 60s. His remarkable courage was showcased on August 12, 1956, during an anti-insurgency operation in Nagaland, where he played a pivotal role in neutralizing insurgents, earning him the Ashok Chakra (Class III), now known as ‘Shaurya Chakra,’ on April 21, 1960.
Retired since 1960, Havildar Mering Ao’s contributions extended beyond the military. He served as the Gaon Budha (village head) for an extended period, working tirelessly for the development of his village. His sense of humor and unwavering spirit were evident when asked about his health in comparison to his 98-year-old wife, Senliyangla Ao.
In a surprising turn of events, Lt Gen PC Nair discovered Havildar Mering Ao’s love for singing Mohammad Rafi songs. On request, the war hero showcased his musical talent, singing with incredible passion and rhythm, defying his age.
Recognizing the need to preserve and share the first-hand accounts of this living legend, the Assam Rifles has decided to publish a comprehensive story on the Life and Times of Havildar Mering Ao. For them, he is not just a war hero but a legend, and it’s time for the world to know about this remarkable individual whose accomplishments continue to inspire.

During this, he handed over the demand letter regarding the construction of Chirmiri-Nagpur Halt Rail Line, the much awaited demand of lakhs of people of rural area Kharagwan including Chirmiri-Manendragarh.
It may be noted that in 2018, an MoU was signed between the Railway Board and the then BJP government at a cost of Rs 241 crore with 50-50 percent expenditure. Under this, MLA Shyam Bihari Jaiswal informed Chief Minister Sai about the problems being faced in the construction of Chirmiri-Nagpur Halt rail line approved under this.

Already happened. For this project, the MLA has asked the Chief Minister to start the land acquisition process immediately and has requested to release the state share in the upcoming budget.
The newly elected MLA told the Chief Minister that with the completion of this project, lakhs of people of Chirmiri, Manendragarh, Khadgwan will be able to get the benefit of all passenger and express trains running from Ambikapur. MLA Shyam Bihari Jaiswal has said that in my election manifesto, I had prominently said that we had done the bhoomi pujan of the railway line, and we will also complete its construction. In this sequence, I handed over the first demand letter to Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai today. JD-U MP calls INDIA alliance meeting a ‘nonsense fiasco’, says – earlier they used to give samosas, but…
Patna. Janata Dal United MP Sunil Kumar Pintu termed the INDIA alliance meeting as a sham. He said that no concrete decision was taken in the meeting. Along with this, he expressed regret over being given only tea and biscuits in the meeting.
Sunil Kumar Pintu has said in an exclusive conversation with a TV channel that the opposition leaders had high expectations from the fourth meeting of the Indi alliance. People were hopeful that something concrete would come out of this meeting and a concrete decision would be taken, but the meeting was completely delayed.
The JDU MP further said that in earlier meetings, tea and samosas were served, but now Congress itself has said that we are short of funds. You donate money to us. Yesterday’s meeting was limited only to tea and biscuits and even samosas were not available.
Let us tell you that Sunil Kumar Pintu has already given statements going beyond the party line. Recently, when the election results of five states came and BJP formed the government in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, he openly praised Prime Minister Modi and cursed Congress.
Modi’s magic has worked
