  • Anti-Terror Operation Underway After 4 Soldiers Killed In Ambush In J&K’s Poonch |

POONCH/JAMMU: A massive anti-terror operation is currently underway after four soldiers lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries as heavily armed terrorists ambushed two Army vehicles in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. The attack occurred at a blind curve at Dhatyar Morh between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz, under the jurisdiction of Surankote police station, around 3:45 pm. The security forces are conducting a massive search operation in and around Dera Ki Gali, also known as the DKG area after the incident. A joint search and combing operation is being conducted by the Indian Army, CRPF and the J&K Police.

The People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), an offshoot of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has reportedly claimed responsibility for the deadly ambush. Former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir – Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti – have strongly condemned the attack.

    Swift Response Amidst Ambush

The targeted vehicles were en route to a cordon-and-search operation when the terrorists launched the ambush. According to Jammu-based Defence PRO Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, the joint search operation was initiated based on “hard intelligence” about the presence of terrorists. As additional forces moved to the site, the terrorists opened fire on the Army vehicles—a truck and a Gypsy. The troops promptly responded, leading to a tragic outcome with four soldiers losing their lives and three sustaining injuries.

    Anti-Terror Operation Underway

The operation is currently in progress, and officials are actively working to gather further details. Disturbing images and videos from the site depict the aftermath, with blood on the street, broken helmets, and shattered windscreens of the Army vehicles. There is speculation that soldiers might have engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the terrorists during the intense confrontation, and there are concerns that the terrorists may have taken away arms belonging to the targeted soldiers.

As the operation unfolds, authorities are diligently working to gather more information and mitigate the threat posed by terrorists in the region. This incident follows a recent major gunfight in the Dharmsal belt of the Bajimaal forest area in the nearby Rajouri district, where five Army personnel, including two captains, lost their lives last month.

The stretch between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz has been a hotspot for violence, with dense forests leading to Chamrer and Bhata Dhurian forests. The region has witnessed multiple encounters this year, resulting in 54 casualties, including 19 security personnel and 28 terrorists. Officials attribute the surge in violence to “desperate attempts from across the border” to revive terrorism in the region.

In the face of this tragic incident, the authorities are grappling with the ongoing challenge of maintaining security in the border region, where terrorists have been persistent in their attempts to infiltrate.

  • China Earthquake: Death Toll Rises To 137, Dozen Still Missing | world news

Dahejia: A dozen people were still missing on Thursday after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Gansu province late Monday, and netizens questioned the speed at which rescue operations had ended.

Chinese media reported that search-and-rescue work in Gansu ended at 3 pm (0700 GMT) on Tuesday, about 15 hours after the disaster hit a remote and mountainous area near the border straddling Gansu and Qinghai provinces. It was not immediately clear whether the search in Qinghai was continuing.

In Gansu, 115 people had been found dead as of 9 am on Wednesday (0100 GMT) and 784 were injured, authorities said. Gansu has not reported any missing persons.

Neighboring Qinghai saw its death toll rise to 22 with 198 injured and 12 missing as of 8:56 pm on Wednesday.

More than 207,000 homes were wrecked and nearly 15,000 collapsed in Gansu, affecting more than 145,000 people.

Discussions online showed netizens curious about how quickly rescue efforts wrapped up in Gansu, with many suggesting that the sub-freezing temperatures were the main factor in shortening the “golden period” for finding survivors – typically 72 hours post-disaster.

People trapped under rubble exposed to prolonged temperatures of -10° Celsius (14°F) run the risk of rapid hypothermia and may only be able to live for five to 10 hours even if uninjured, local media reported, citing researchers.

“They would have been dead by the time they were found, even 24 hours is already too long. Outdoor temperatures are below minus 10 C,” a user on Chinese microblogging platform Weibo commented.

Some users on Weibo considered other factors such as that the search area was not especially wide, and that people have been all accounted for, leading to rescue efforts ending in less than a day.

    SURVIVING THE COLD

Rescuers on Wednesday pulled to safety victims of the earthquake, which jolted Jishishan county in Gansu a minute before midnight on Monday, sending many residents in the area out of homes into the cold in the dead of the night.

Survivors face uncertainty in the wintry months ahead without permanent shelter amid freezing temperatures.

Many of the affected families are Hui people, an ethnic minority mostly found in western Chinese provinces and regions such as Gansu, Ningxia and Shaanxi.

In Gansu’s Sibuzi village, villagers worried about the freezing winter.

“Many people escaped from their homes, some without socks, just ran out barefoot. It’s extremely cold standing on the ground,” said Zhou Habai, an ethnic Hui woman.

The 24-year-old, now staying in a shift tent after her home was destroyed, said some villagers have been gathering and burning firewood to keep warm.

About 60% of the survivors have not received tents, 63-year-old Ye Zhiying, from the same village, told Reuters.

He said officials from the Communist Party had told them that the village would distribute tents by noon on Thursday, and would be set up in less than a week.

“Whether everyone can be accommodated or not, we don’t know,” said the Hui villager, who was given a tent on Wednesday.

Roads, power and water lines and agricultural production facilities have suffered damage, and the quake triggered land and mudslides that swept through villages in Qinghai’s Haidong where the missing were reported from.

  • Three More Opposition MPs Suspended From Lok Sabha, Total 146 Now |

New Delhi: Amid the escalating tension between the Narendra Modi government and the united Opposition, three more Opposition Members of Parliament were suspended on Thursday over unruly behaviour, taking the total number of those suspended till now to 146. According to reports, DK Suresh, Nakul Nath and Deepak Baij – all three Congress party MPs – have now been suspended from the lower house. The move follows the recent suspension of dozens of Opposition MPs who demanded a debate on the December 13 Lok Sabha security breach and criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s handling of the situation.

    Opposition Holds Protest March

The latest wave of suspensions unfolded in the aftermath of a protest march by Opposition MPs, who took to the streets to express their discontent. The suspension of lawmakers demanding a discussion on the security breach and criticizing the Home Minister’s statements became a flashpoint for Opposition leaders.

    Shashi Tharoor Condemns Govt’s Actions

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, a suspended Lok Sabha MP, strongly condemned the government’s handling of the situation. He remarked that the government’s refusal to address the security breach in the House and the subsequent suspension of MPs demonstrated a lack of commitment to the conventions of Parliamentary democracy. “The government’s actions were unacceptable and showed no willingness to honor the principles of Parliamentary democracy,” Tharoor stated during the suspended MPs’ march.

Concerns Over Passage of Bills In Absence Of MPs

Tharoor highlighted the passing of three crucial bills in the Lok Sabha, including the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita Bill, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita Bill, and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, in the absence of 97 MPs. He described this as a “disgrace” and emphasized the importance of legislative debates, opposition criticism, and ministerial answers in interpreting laws. “It’s a disgrace. Just last year, one of the Supreme Court Justices observed that in the absence of legislative debates of opposition criticism and ministerial answers, it would be difficult for judges to interpret laws by understanding their legislative intent. So when even that is not possible for the judges, you can understand what a disservice to the country this government has done by bulldozing these laws through without even any pretense of consultation or discussion with the opposition,” he said, adding that it is “truly a moment to start writing obituaries for the parliamentary democracy in our country” Tharoor said.

    ‘Democracy Under Threat’

The suspended MP expressed grave concerns about the state of democracy in the country, stating, “It is truly a moment to start writing obituaries for the parliamentary democracy in our country.” Participating in the protest march, another suspended MP, John Brittas of CPI(M), went a step further by suggesting that the Constitution should be amended to declare India as a monarchy. He described the situation as the “brutal killing of democracy” and labeled the Parliament as “Opposition-Mukt.”

    Opposition Leader Decries ‘Authoritarianism’

Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, condemned the passage of important legislation through the suspension of opposition MPs. He characterized this approach as “authoritarianism” and called for collective action to “Save Democracy.” “We, the people of India need to Save Democracy. Passing important legislation by suspending Opposition MPs is not Democracy. It is the worst kind of authoritarianism,” Kharge asserted.

At the moment, the suspension of Opposition MPs continues to be a contentious issue, raising concerns about the future of democracy in the country.

  • SC gives important decision regarding mining permission in Chhattisgarh, instructions given to Rajasthan government to maintain mining rights

In a significant victory for Rajasthan, the Supreme Court has directed Chhattisgarh to retain its mining rights after a decade-long legal battle. With this, the uncertainties hovering over the Parsa East Kanta Basan (PEKB) mine of state-run Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh have ended.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra said in the judgment delivered on October 16, 2023, “The disposal of the civil appeal and the special leave petition is done as per the signed order. The pending applications, if any, are disposed of.” The Supreme Court refused to interfere with the permission given by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the State of Chhattisgarh, due to which there is now no legal crisis on continuing mining in the second phase of the PEKB mine.

Sudeep Srivastava said in the case filed through lawyer Prashant Bhushan that, this result will make it easier to supply cheap coal to the power generation projects of Rajasthan. In 2007, the Coal Ministry allotted the PEKB mine to RRVUNL. However, five years later, in 2012, he challenged the regulatory permissions granted by competent state and central government agencies. The legal dispute has hit RRVUNL’s investment of Rs 40,000 crore to commission 4340 MW power generation capacity and enable the network which was dependent on coal from this mine.

The biodiversity study in the entire Hasdeo Arand Forest area was conducted by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education in compliance with the directions passed by the National Green Tribunal. Based on the Biodiversity Assessment Report of July 2021 of the Council and the recommendations of the Forest Advisory Committee of December 2021, the Ministry of Environment had approved Phase-II mining operations for PEKB Coal Mine on February 2, 2022. According to the above approval of the Environment Ministry, the Government of Chhattisgarh had also given permission for coal mining in the PEKB mine on March 25, 2022.

The Supreme Court agreed with the contention of the counsel for RRVUNL that since the above orders have been issued by the MoEF&CC and the State of Chhattisgarh as a result of the order of the National Green Tribunal, the reason given in the proceedings was not tenable.

    Know what is PEKB mine

PEKB mine is considered one of the best operated mines of India. It has been awarded the highest five-star rating by the Ministry of Coal since 2019 for excellence in operations, environment, safety, rehabilitation and resettlement. RRVUNL has developed a model mine and has invested heavily in community centric initiatives for education and empowerment, skill development, health care, women cooperative and rural infrastructure around the PEKB mine. The PEKB mine is directly and indirectly providing livelihood to 5000 families in the backward Surguja district along with royalty and other taxes worth crores of rupees to the state and central governments.

We do not want to come in the way of development – Supreme Court

RRVUNL has already completed coal mining in the first phase and is seeking additional land from the Government of Chhattisgarh for mining in the next phase as per regulatory approval. Earlier in December 2022, in another case related to RRVUNL’s Parsa mine in Chhattisgarh, the Supreme Court bench of Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath had cleared the way, saying “We do not want to come in the way of development And we are very clear on this. We will determine your rights under the law, but not at the expense of development. “We will not stop any project unless the illegality is clearly egregious.” With the favorable judgments of the apex court, the hurdles have been removed for RRVUNL to proceed with mining at both PEKB mine and Parsa mine to meet the energy requirements of Rajasthan.

Such is the story of NEET aspirant Prerna Singh, who, despite all odds in life, could clear NEET UG 2023 with flying colours.

    Prerna Scores 686 Marks

Prerna cleared the NEET UG exam with 686 marks out of a total of 720, which is enough to get admission to top government medical colleges in India. Behind her success, Prerna had her fair share of hardships to overcome. 20-year-old Prerna hails from Rajasthan’s Kota and her father used to be an auto-rickshaw driver, and the sole breadwinner of the family.

    Father Dies of Cancer

While Prerna was pursuing her studies, her father passed away and the responsibility of the whole family fell on her shoulders. As per reports, when Prerna was studying in class 10 in 2018), her father died due to cancer. Their single source of income fell like a house of cards and there was no other source to help the family. Not just this, Prerna and her mother also had a burden of a Rs 27 lakh loan which they had to repay without any income.

    No Money To Repay Loans

Prerna’s family did not have enough money to repay all the loans. And many times, she used to prepare for the exam on an empty stomach. Those days, she used to have just one meal per day — a single roti and chutney. However, her strong determination kept her focused on the exam and she studied for 12 hours every day after her relatives lent her money for NEET coaching.

    From Struggle To Success

And now as Prerna scored well in the exam, she is likely to take admission to a government medical college. Prerna and her mother and relatives are excited about her clearing the NEET examination, which will get her into a premier medical institute in India, most likely an AIIMS branch.
