  • In Big Setback To INDIA Bloc In Bihar, 3 ‘Mahagathbandhan’ MLAs Join BJP |

PATNA: The opposition INDIA bloc faced another setback in Bihar as three prominent ‘Mahagathbandhan’ MLAs joined the BJP on Tuesday. In a significant development, Congress MLAs Murari Prasad Gautam and Siddharth Saurav, along with RJD MLA Sangita Kumari, formally joined the BJP in the presence of top saffron party leaders. The trio later held discussions with Bihar Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha.

Blow To Opposition Ahead of Lok Sabha Polls

This development comes at a crucial juncture, just weeks before the Election Commission announces the schedule for the Lok Sabha polls scheduled for April-May this year. The opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance, already grappling with the exit of Nitish Kumar last month, now faces internal dissent.

Congress MLA Siddharth Singh Upset With Party Leadership

Siddharth Singh, representing the Vikram constituency, is reported to be dissatisfied with the state leadership of the Congress. Notably, during a trust vote, Singh had refused to relocate to Hyderabad along with other Congress MLAs, citing prior commitments in his Bikram constituency.

    Impact On Mahagathbandhan’s Seat-Sharing Formula

While the Mahagathbandhan alliance in Bihar, consisting of Congress, RJD, and Left parties, is working on a seat-sharing formula for the upcoming polls, the departure of these three MLAs is a significant blow. Murari Prasad Gautam, Siddharth Saurav, and Sangita Kumari hail from Chenari, Vikram, and Mohaniya Assembly seats, respectively.

    Congress Faces Internal Rebellion

This development marks the first sign of rebellion within the Congress party. Siddharth Singh’s decision not to join the other MLAs in Hyderabad earlier and Murari Gautam losing his cabinet berth last month after Nitish Kumar’s exit indicate internal challenges within the Congress party in the state.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA secured a resounding victory with 353 seats, while the UPA managed 91 seats, and other parties won 98. With the political landscape shifting in Bihar, the upcoming polls will be closely watched for their impact on the state’s political dynamics. The departure of these three Mahagathbandhan MLAs is poised to influence the electoral narrative as parties gear up for another round of crucial elections.

  • Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Left’s Wayanad Bid Throws Another Challenge For Rahul Gandhi, Congress-Led INDI Alliance |

In a move that hints at more rifts in the Congress-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, the CPI(M) today announced its candidate fro the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala, curently held by Rahul Gandhi. The CPI(M) indirectly asked Congress to vacate the seat for the Left pary. The move puts the Congress on backfoot once again as the INDIA bloc parties have been posing a new challenge to the grand old party every other day.

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said, “CPI has declared its candidate for the seat in Wayanad, Comrade Annie Raja, who has played a key role in ‘Mahila Andholan’. Now she will be the candidate from the side of the whole LDF. Rahul Gandhi and Congress need to think, they say that their fight is against BJP. In Kerala, if you come and fight against Left, what message are you giving? So they need to think about their seat once again.”

In the 2019 elections, the CPI had fielded 4 candidates but lost on all seats. Of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala, Congress bagged 15, the Indian Union Muslim League two and the CPI(M), KC(M), and RSP won 1 seat each.

    Kerala Dare For Congress

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has announced its first list of four candidates for Lok Sabha elections in Kerala yesterday. The CPI fielded Pannian Raveendran from Thiruvananthapuram, Annie Raja from Wayanad, VS Sunil Kumar from Thrissur and Arun Kumar from Mavelikara. Notably, all of the four seats are currently held by the Congress party – Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad and Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram, T. N. Prathapan from Thrissur and Kodikunnil Suresh from the Mavelikara seat. By announcing the candidate for these seats first, CPI has played a similar card like Akhilesh Yadav did in Uttar Pradesh. Now, the ball is in Congress party’s court whether it accepts or rejects the Left party’s offer.

The Left party has urged Congress to not contest from Kerala and insteat focus on North where the BJP is very strong. Just like Trinamool Congress in Bengal, Left and its allies want Congress to leave Kerala to them only.

    Congress On Backfoot

Congress is already on a backfoot when it comes to seat sharing as part of the INDIA bloc. While Mamata Banerjee has already refused to ally with Congress or Left in Bengal saying that TMC will contest all 42 seats alone against the BJP. Similarly, the AAP said that it will contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab alone. While the AAP and SP sealed seat sharing deal with Congress for some states, that made Congress minorty shareholder. In Uttar Pradesh, Congress has just got 17 seats out of the 80 while in Delhi, it has got 3 out of seven seats.

    Will Rahul Gandhi Quit Wayanad?

It’s unlikely that Rahul Gandhi will leave the Wayanad seat. Recently, Rahul Gandhi rushed to the Wayanad after elephant attacks happened in the region. Also, Gandhi won from the Wayanad seat but lost from Amethi. There are very low chances of Rahul Gandhi contesting from Amethi once again. Thus, it’s likely that while Congress may agree to take one or two step back in Kerala to appease the Left, but it may go for a friendly fight from the Wayanad seat.

  • Odisha’s Pramod Bhagat wins gold medal in Para-Badminton World Championship in Thailand

Bhubaneswar: In the longest final of para-badminton, Padma Shri Pramod Bhagat defeated Daniel Bethell of England in the SL3 category to retain his gold at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2024 in Thailand today.

The win broke several records for Pramod, not only making him the first para-athlete to win three consecutive golds at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, but also equaling Lin Dan’s record of five World Championships. He has won gold in 2009, 2015, 2019, 2022 and 2024.

The rivalry between Pramod and Daniel Bethel is well known and this match proved to be exactly that. The match, which lasted 1 hour 40 minutes, was very long and tight and could have gone either way. Pramod Bhagat started the game with 5 consecutive points and took a good lead, but Bethel made a strong comeback and won the first set 21-14.

The second set also started in the same aggressive manner, but as the match progressed, there were long rallies and both players were unable to open up and their defense was excellent. Somehow, Pramod made mistakes on Bethel’s part and won the second set 21 -15.

With the match tied, the deciding set was going to be crucial and Pramod once again changed his strategy to confuse Bethel, giving him the lead and winning his third consecutive World Championship 21-14. Apart from this, Pramod won a bronze medal in men’s doubles with Sukant Kadam and another bronze medal in mixed doubles with Manish Ramdas. Commenting on the same, Pramod said, “This win holds a very special place in my heart for various reasons. Firstly, I have been able to equal my idol Lin Dan’s record of 5 World Championships and secondly, I have been able to retain 3 consecutive World Championships.”

He added, “This match with Bethel will be the toughest for me mentally and physically. I haven’t been playing well against Bethel the past few months and it was time for me to prove the doubters wrong. The match was tiring and Bethel played brilliantly but somehow I managed to win.”

  • ‘By Next Monday We’ll Have A Ceasefire’: US President Biden On Israel-Hamas conflict | world news

US President Joe Biden highlighted that he hopes there will be a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict by “next Monday,” as reported by CNN.

He further said that we are close to it but it’s not done yet. “Well, I hope by the beginning of the weekend, I mean, the end of the weekend,” Biden said after being asked when a ceasefire might start. “My national security adviser tells me that we’re close. We’re close, it’s not done yet. And my hope is that by next Monday we’ll have a ceasefire,” Biden added. Earlier on Monday, according to CNN, Hamas backed off some key demands in the negotiations for a hostage deal and paused the fighting in Gaza following Israeli accusations that its position was “delusional”.

It brought the negotiating parties closer to an initial agreement that could halt the fighting and see a group of Israeli hostages released, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

Following the meeting held in Paris between the US, Egyptian, and Israeli intelligence chiefs and the Qatari prime minister, a senior Biden administration official said, “The major obstacles have been resolved in terms of Hamas insisting on a full withdrawal of Israeli forces and an end the war.”

“Hamas’ requirements for the number of Palestinians (prisoners that) would have to be freed have declined,” the official added. Meanwhile, a diplomatic source familiar with the discussions said that Hamas softened its position ahead of an agreement on the first phase of a deal, according to CNN.

However, it is expected that more challenging hurdles will emerge later when complex issues like Hamas releasing male IDF hostages and an end to the war are discussed. Furthermore, those involved in the discussions said that an agreement would likely be implemented in multiple phases and once an initial deal is made, it could lead to a truce lasting for as long as six weeks with a group of Israeli hostages released, including women, children, the elderly and the sick, in exchange for a smaller number of Palestinian prisoners than Hamas had initially demanded.

According to CNN, the second phase is where discussions are expected to get even more complicated. Reportedly, Israeli leaders have made it clear that they intend to launch a military offensive into Rafah, while in an earlier proposal, Hamas said they want to use a second phase to discuss “the requirements necessary for the continuation of the mutual cessation of military operations.” .”

Earlier on Sunday, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the Paris meeting resulted in “an understanding among the four of them about what the basic contours of a hostage deal for a temporary ceasefire would look like.”

“There will have to be indirect discussions by Qatar and Egypt with Hamas because ultimately they will have to agree to release the hostages. That work is underway. And we hope that in the coming days, we can drive to a point where there is actually a firm and final agreement on this issue. But we will have to wait and see,” he added.
