  • Paris Olympics 2024: Veteran Commentator Bob Ballard Removed After Sexist Remark On Australian Swimmers | Other

Veteran sports commentator Bob Ballard has been dismissed from his role at the Paris Olympics following a sexist remark about Australian female swimmers. The incident occurred as the 4x100m freestyle relay team, featuring Mollie O’Callaghan, Emma McKeon, Meg Harris, and Shayna Jack, celebrated their gold medal win.

As the triumphant Australian team was leaving the pool deck, Ballard made an inappropriate comment, saying they were “finishing up” and adding, “you know what women are like… hanging around, doing their make up.” The comment quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation.

Eurosport, the broadcaster for the Olympics, responded promptly by removing Ballard from their commentary lineup. In a statement, Eurosport condemned the remark, stating, “During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.”

Ballard, a seasoned commentator known for his extensive coverage of sports since the 1980s, had been a fixture in global sports broadcasting, including multiple Olympic Games and World Championships. His coverage spanned various sports, from swimming and diving to water polo, ice hockey, and wheelchair tennis.

The comment was made as O’Callaghan, McKeon, Harris, and Jack celebrated their victory over the US and China, marking Australia’s fourth consecutive gold medal in the event. Ballard’s co-commentator, British swimming champion Lizzie Simmonds, immediately criticized the remark as “outrageous,” which led to laughter from Ballard.

Swimming Australia has been approached for a comment on the incident. Ballard has yet to address the controversy publicly.

Today, the Youth Congress ran a ‘Burn Electricity Bills’ movement in the electricity offices in all the assemblies of Chhattisgarh. In the previous Congress government, the beneficiaries of the half-half electricity bill scheme were available. The general public has given their increased electricity bills to us and we are agitating in 90 assemblies today.

Sharma said, today we burnt the electricity bill in front of the electricity office and presented the burnt ashes to the officials. Along with this, we have collected the burnt ashes of the electricity bill in an envelope and we will also get the burnt electricity bills from all the 90 assembly constituencies where the agitation is going on today and after filling them in the envelope, we will present it to Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai. We will demand from the CM that the rates of electricity bill should be reduced. This agitation will continue further. This is the beginning. In the coming times also, we will hold fierce protests regarding the electricity bill.

Mainly State President Akash Sharma, PCC General Secretary Deepak Mishra, Saqlain Mushtaq, City District President Girish Dubey, Youth Congress General Secretary Bhavesh Shukla, NSUI State Vice President Amit Sharma, District President Vinod Kashyap, Assembly President Sameer Bhatt, State Convenor Tushar Guha, State Secretary Abhishek Kasar, Ruchir Dubey, Ashutosh Mishra, Deepak Mishra, Lakshit Tiwari, Prateek Sharma, Shubham Dubey etc. were involved in the demonstration.

  • India Issues Advisory For Its Citizens In Lebanon Amid Rising Israel-Hezbollah Tensions, Advises To ‘Exercise Caution’ | world news

The Indian embassy in Beirut has issued a cautionary advisory for its citizens living in Lebanon. The advisory comes in the wake of escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The embassy urged Indian nationals to stay alert and maintain communication with them due to the recent developments in the region.

    Contact Information For Indians

In their advisory, the Indian embassy emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and advised to exercise caution. Indian nationals in Lebanon or those planning to travel there are advised to contact the embassy through email at [email protected] or the emergency phone number +96176860128.

    What is happening in Lebanon?

The situation has intensified following an announcement by the Israeli military that its jets bombed Hezbollah’s weapons depots and infrastructure in the Bekaa Valley, eastern Lebanon, on Sunday. This action was in response to an earlier incident where a rocket from Lebanon struck a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, resulting in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers. The Israeli military described this as the deadliest civilian attack since October 7. There are growing concerns about a broader regional conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Notably, Hezbollah denied responsibility for the recent rocket attack. The White House National Security Council has engaged in discussions with Israeli and Lebanese counterparts, aiming for a diplomatic solution to halt the hostilities in the border region.

    Impact On Air Travel

The tensions have also impacted air travel. Flights at Beirut Airport have faced cancellations or delays, with Lebanon’s Middle East Airlines (MEA) citing insurance risks due to the escalating conflict. Additionally, Lufthansa announced the suspension of five routes to and from Beirut, operated by Swiss International Air Lines, Eurowings, and Lufthansa, until July 30, as a precautionary measure.

  • How Technology is affecting our day to day Lives |

With time, Technology has grown so much. From the very first telephone which we weren’t able to carry anywhere to Mobile Phones which we carry everywhere and cannot possibly imagine our lives. Technology has come a long way and plays a vital role in our lives.

Technology has now become a very major part of our lives. We are now able to do almost everything on our mobile phones/laptops. It has many pro’s like:

    1. Easily available:

It is accessible to everyone anywhere. Today, people in villages too have access to it. It is also very easy to use ,ie., there is no need for any specialist to teach how to use it.

    2. Very helpful:

It is very helpful in work or emergencies. For eg., a student can take help from it to understand a concept/topic better or it can help in ordering medicines or calling an ambulance in places where there is no pharmacy or hospital nearby.

    3. Improved communication:

With technology, communication has gotten easy. People are now able to talk to anyone anywhere. Now people don’t have to write letters and wait for days or stand in line at the P.C.O. Also now people can carry mobile phones everywhere, so, if it is urgent, they don’t have to wait to get home and talk on the Telephone/Landline.

    4. Global connectivity:

With the help of Technology and many emerging social media apps, people are now able to connect with other people online. Now we are able to talk/connect with people across the globe.

But with great pros also come many cons. Technology has surely helped us in many ways and will also help us in future through AI (Artificial Intelligence) etc. but there are some cons/drawbacks of it. The drawbacks are:

    1. Isolation:

If we see today’s generation, we might notice that they have started to detach and spend more time on their mobile phones. Everybody has isolated themselves and doesn’t interact much with each other offline which is dangerous for them.

    2. Identity theft:

With growing technology, there are greater chances of identity theft, i.e., any person might impersonate anyone and mislead their known one’s and might ask them for money or personal details which can be very dangerous.

    3. Dependence:

We use more technology and apps like google etc. to gain knowledge in today’s time which has made us dependent on mobile phones/laptops to do our work. This dependence has led to decline in gaining knowledge from the books.

    4. Addiction:

As told above, the youth nowadays are stuck to their phones and do nothing if they don’t have it with them. Even the small kids nowadays are stuck to their parents’ phones and if the phone is confiscated, they start to cry. This addiction might get horrible if not fixed in time.

Therefore, Technology is meant to help us in emergencies and build the nation forward but overconsumption of it and using it most of the time might harm us both physically and mentally. Thus, technology has both pros and cons and impacts us both in a positive and negative way.
