    — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) August 29, 2024

On Thursday, The Washington Post reported that Israeli forces killed five ‘militants,’ including a top commander of the Islamic Jihad, during ongoing raids. This marks the second day of what appears to be one of the largest operations in the region in recent years.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that Mohamed Jaber, also known as Abu Shuja’a, was among those killed inside a mosque in Tulkarm after “exchanges of fire.” Jaber, the commander of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad-led Tulkarm battalion, was a key target for Israel due to his involvement in planning and executing attacks, including a shooting in June that killed an Israeli civilian, Amnon Muchtar, in Qalqilya.

Jaber, 26, had previously evaded capture; Israeli media had reported his death during a raid earlier this year, only for him to later appear alive at his own funeral. The Tulkarm branch of Palestinian Islamic Jihad confirmed Jaber’s death, labeling it the “assassination of our leader.” In response, they claimed their fighters detonated an explosive device and shot at an Israeli infantry unit behind a mosque, causing “direct hits,” according to The Washington Post.

As the operation continues, Palestinians have raised concerns that the sweeping incursion could escalate violence and disrupt access to essential services. The military actions around Jenin and Tulkarm are ongoing, with both sides engaged in intense exchanges of fire.

  • Priyanka Mocks UP’s New Social Media Policy As ‘Regressive’, Says ‘If You Call Day As Night, Then It Is Night…’ |

The Uttar Pradesh government, facing flak over its new social media policy, came under attack from Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday, as she mocked the scheme as a ‘regressive and self-eulogizing’ move.  Priyanka Gandhi, taking to X, shared a satirical post, saying “You will say what you like. If you call day as night, it will be night.” Firing a volley of questions, she questioned the state government on ensuring the security of women and also asked what steps it has taken to resolve the recruitment reservation case, concerning 69,000 teachers.

“In which category will the voices of women seeking justice fall in the social media policy of the Uttar Pradesh government? In which category will the questions raised in the 69000 teacher recruitment reservation scam fall? In which category would exposing the BJP government by BJP leaders and MLAs fall?” asked Priyanka Gandhi.

Notably, two girls were found hanging from a tree in Farrukhabad district on Wednesday, sending shockwaves in the city and leaving the state administration searching for answers. The Congress leader further accused the Yogi Adityanath government of stifling the freedom of speech and suppressing the truth by issuing such ‘diktats’.

She said that the state government rather than resolving people’s issues was finding ‘new ways’ to suppress the truth. “The policy of ‘if you call day as night, then it is night or else jail’ is another way of suppressing the truth. Can the BJP not think of anything more than crushing democracy and the Constitution?” she further said.

The UP cabinet on Wednesday gave nod to Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy 2024, which broadly has two components — one is encouragement for popularising the government’s schemes while another is about crackdown for objectionable and offensive posts on social media.

Soon after the policy details filtered into the public domain, Opposition parties cried foul and claimed that it was a blatant attempt to quell freedom of speech as this would allow the state administration to ‘torture and terrorise’ people even for speaking the truth.

  • ‘Don’t be confused’, Smriti Irani warns BJP about Rahul Gandhi’s political transformation…

New Delhi. Former Union Minister Smriti Irani acknowledged the change in the leadership of opposition leader and her arch rival Rahul Gandhi after the party got relief in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Along with this, she also warned the BJP not to live under the illusion that Rahul’s actions are good, bad or childish, but to recognize that he has changed his politics.

Irani said during the podcast that the Rae Bareli MP believes he has “tasted success” and has now adopted a different style in political discourse. “Rahul Gandhi has experienced a change in his politics. He believes he has tasted success. For the first time, he is speaking so effectively. Rahul Gandhi is now doing a different kind of politics,” she said.

Smriti said that Rahul is very careful in his speeches when it comes to speaking about caste. She mentioned that Rahul wears T-shirts in Parliament because he knows what message it will send to the younger generation.

He said, “When he speaks about caste, he takes a significant stand for the first time in his political history. When he wears a white T-shirt in Parliament, he knows what kind of message it sends to the youth.” Apart from this, he also warned the BJP that we should not live in the wrong perception about his actions – whether you consider them good, bad or childish – he is doing a different kind of politics.

It is worth noting that Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi from his stronghold Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, she lost to Gandhi family confidant Kishori Lal Sharma in the 2024 elections. On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi won both Wayanad and Rae Bareli seats.

The Congress party managed to secure 99 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, up from the 52 seats it won in 2019. However, the Indian bloc secured 235 seats.
