  • Fish farmers are being deceived! Bought fish seeds by paying in cash, farmers did not get the benefit of subsidy

Many schemes of the State and Central Government are being run in the Fisheries Department to promote rural fish farmers, but due to lack of information, the fish farmers are not getting the full benefit of it or they are being cheated. The matter came to light through documents extracted from RTI. Information about the expenditure incurred on the scheme in the financial year 2023-24 was extracted by activist Mohammad Latif.

    According to the document, in this financial year, it has been claimed to provide improved quality fish seeds worth Rs 10 lakh 10450 to 168 tribal and non-tribal fish farmers of the district on the basis of 50 percent subsidy. The record also contained the names of 20 beneficiaries from Koyba village of Mainpur block, upon meeting whom the farmers told that they would pay cash instead of subsidy and bring seeds.

    Aadhaar card was taken from the account on the pretext of returning the money.

    To know the truth of the matter, we met Shriram Netam, Lambar Singh, Kunwar Singh, Chhattar Singh, Ashiq Manjhi among the farmers named in the records. Everyone expressed ignorance of any kind of plan. People said that last year the employees of the fish department contacted them, they were promised to get high quality fish seeds at a cheap price, at his request everyone hired a pickup and reached Gariaband Fish Depot. Rs 4,4000 was taken from everyone. When they went, the quantity of fish given to them seemed more expensive than the market price. Farmers said that all the people who were given fish seeds. The people of the department had asked for a copy of the Aadhaar card from everyone and promised that the money would be deposited in their account as soon as the funds arrived. The matter is said to be of September 2023.

    The fish was not even suitable for lease

    He had already realized that he had been cheated when he was told that the seed money would be credited to his account and it did not.     Complaint made to Divisional Commissioner

    After matching the claims made in the records, the RTI activist has filed a written complaint with the Raipur Division Commissioner, accusing the Fisheries Department of huge irregularities in the implementation of the scheme. Complainant Mohammad Latif said that in the last financial year, fish nets worth Rs 26 lakh and ice boxes worth more than Rs 15 lakh were purchased, but the department did not provide information about which beneficiaries it was given to. Latif alleged that like the subsidy scheme, there have been huge irregularities in the distribution of nets and ice boxes. Every year, the department not only distributes fish but also pays lakhs of rupees by claiming to purchase seeds from many small fish seed farmers of the district. When the entire expenditure was investigated, many shocking revelations were made.

    Everyone whose name is in the record got seeds on subsidy

    In this case, Deputy Director of Fisheries Department, Alok Vashishtha has completely rejected the allegations. He said that seeds have been provided in subsidy to all those whose names are in the records. The money taken from them is only half of the cool price of the given quantity. There is a shortage of staff in the entire district, it is not possible to reach out to every farmer in every block and tell each and every thing. Net and box distribution is done to farmers only in camps or special events.

  • ‘Not Chosen That Path…’: US Says India Not Cooperating With Canada On Nijjar’s Murder Probe | world news

    The tension between Canada and India escalated on Tuesday as the United States claimed that India is not cooperating in Canada’s investigation into the assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. During a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the gravity of the situation, saying, “When it comes to the Canadian matter, we have made clear that the allegations are extremely serious and they need to be taken seriously. We wanted to see the government of India cooperate with Canada in its investigation. Obviously, they have not chosen that path.”

    Prime Minister Justin Trudeau intensified the controversy just a day earlier, alleging that Indian government officials were involved in Nijjar’s killing last June in Surrey, British Columbia. Trudeau claimed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has “clear and compelling evidence” indicating that agents of the Indian government are engaged in activities that threaten public safety.

    He mentioned “clandestine information gathering techniques, coercive behavior targeting South Asian Canadians, and involvement in over a dozen threatening and violent acts, including murder.” He labeled these actions as “unacceptable.” India has vehemently denied these allegations. In response to Trudeau’s claims, India not only recalled its High Commissioner from Canada but also expelled six Canadian diplomats stationed in New Delhi.

    The Ministry of External Affairs released a statement asserting, “Since Prime Minister Trudeau made certain allegations in September 2023, the Canadian government has not shared a shred of evidence with the Government of India, despite many requests from our side. This latest step follows interactions that have again witnessed assertions without any facts.” The Ministry accused the Trudeau government of a deliberate strategy to smear India for political gain.

    “Prime Minister Trudeau’s hostility to India has long been in evidence. In 2018, his visit to India, which was aimed at currying favor with a vote bank, rebounded to his discomfort,” the statement read. It criticized Trudeau’s administration for allegedly catering to individuals associated with extremist agendas and pointed out the government’s reliance on a political party whose leader endorses separatist ideology regarding India.

    The Indian government further claimed that the Trudeau administration has provided a platform for violent extremists and terrorists to threaten Indian diplomats and community leaders in Canada, citing instances of death threats and the fast-tracking of citizenship for individuals who entered Canada illegally. They also noted that multiple extradition requests from India concerning terrorists and organized crime leaders living in Canada have been ignored.

    Meanwhile, the United States opted to stay neutral on the diplomatic rift between India and Canada. When asked for comments, Miller reiterated the seriousness of the allegations but noted, “I don’t have any comment on that. But as we’ve said before, they’re serious allegations. And we have wanted to see India take them seriously — seriously and cooperate with Canada’s investigation. They have chosen an alternate path.”

    Addressing the media, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said that the Justin Trudeau government is discussing the issue with other nations and indicated that even sanctions against India are possible. On the other hand, India is sending a team to the United States with the latest update on the investigations related to the controversy. 

    With the diplomatic escalation in place, the focus will now be on the nations that are part of the Five Eyes and G7 nations. For the uninitiated, the Five Eyes (FVEY) nations are an intelligence alliance consisting of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. On the other hand, the G7 nations comprise the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. India has been gracing the G7 as a guest nation. 

    With Canada already on a diplomatic offensive and reaching out to the United Kingdom and the United States, India has also started working to turn the tide in its favour. New Zeland, a member of the FVEY, has already said that the allegations, if proven true, would be very concerning. 

    India already shares warm relations with France, Italy, Japan and the United States. As New Zealand appears to have been siding with Canada, India will have to work with nations like the United Kingdom, Australia and Germany to set things straight and not let the Canadian narrative prevail. It’s time for the Modi government to expose Canada and its support to the anti-India elements in the guise of ‘freedom of speech/expression’.

    SCO Summit: India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has reached Pakistan’s capital Islamabad to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference. He was welcomed by Pakistani officials at Noor Khan Airbase.

    This conference is scheduled to be held on 15 and 16 October, in which Jaishankar will spend less than 24 hours. He is also expected to attend the dinner hosted by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

    Indian Foreign Minister reached Pakistan after 9 years

    Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in Pakistan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference. This is the first time after nine years that an Indian Foreign Minister is visiting Pakistan. Earlier, in December 2015, the then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had gone to Pakistan, where she participated in a conference on Afghanistan. However, relations between India and Pakistan remain tense due to the Kashmir issue and cross-border terrorism.

    SCO Summit: What is Shanghai Cooperation Organization

    The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) began in April 1996, when China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan held a meeting. Its main objective was to reduce racial and religious tensions among themselves, and it was known at that time as the ‘Shanghai Five’.

    However, its actual formation took place on 15 June 2001, when China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan established the ‘Shanghai Co-operation Organisation’. After this, emphasis was also laid on removing racial and religious tensions as well as promoting trade and investment.

    The primary purpose of establishing the Shanghai Five was to prevent and improve tensions on the borders of China and Russia, especially as tensions were rising between the newly independent countries. This objective was achieved in just three years, making it considered one of the most effective organizations.
