    The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will have some sleepless nights before selecting the squad for T20s against Afghanistan with veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli keen to play the World Cup in June.

    The two national selectors, Shiv Sunder Das and Salil Ankola are both in South Africa and will be joined by their chairman Agarkar during the course of the second Test at Newlands.

    It is expected that Agarkar and Co will speak to head coach Rahul Dravid along with Test and ODI skipper Rohit, star batsman Kohli before announcing the squad against Afghanistan.

    ’30-odd players could be monitored during IPL’

    Around 30 T20 specialists, including India and IPL stars, will be monitored ahead of the ICC event in the Caribbean and United States. It remains to be seen whether Agarkar and his colleagues select both Rohit and Kohli for the short series starting January 11 in Mohali or directly check their form and fitness during IPL.

    “Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya aren’t fit. The Afghanistan series won’t tell you anything. Everything will be decided on the basis of the first month of IPL,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

    ‘Workload management and monitoring core group during IPL’

    The BCCI brass knows that they can’t tell any franchise to optimally use a potential pick for the T20 World Cup which will be held in June-July after IPL concludes in the last week of May.

    “The BCCI can never tell a franchise to manage a star player’s workload unless it’s a case of injury management,” the source added.

    So there is a possibility that at least 25 to 30 players are zeroed in and monitored closely during the two months of IPL. There could be a case of injury or fitness issue during the IPL and the selection committee would need two players for each slot, so that the like-for-like replacement is ready. The only player whose ready replacement won’t be available is Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya.

    New Delhi: As the world welcomes the new year with joy and celebrations, the dark cloud of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic looms larger. The beginning of 2024 has seen a concerning rise in coronavirus infections, with Karnataka witnessing a spike of 296 new cases in the last 24 hours, contributing to the nationwide tally of 636 fresh infections.

    The southern state of Karnataka is grappling with the surge as the total number of active COVID-19 cases reached 1245, with 1179 patients under home treatment and 66 admitted to hospitals, including 20 in intensive care units (ICUs).

    Meanwhile, Maharashtra is also facing an alarming situation, reporting 70 new cases on Monday, reflecting a positivity rate exceeding 2 percent. The state recorded 131 cases on the previous day. Fortunately, no deaths were reported, and 32 individuals were discharged. Currently, Maharashtra has 693 active cases, with 42 hospitalized, including nine in ICUs.

    The Union Health Ministry’s latest data reveals a nationwide spike of 636 new COVID-19 cases, with three fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, two in Kerala and one in Tamil Nadu. The total number of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic has now surpassed 4.5 crore, with 4.44 crore recoveries and 5.33 lakh unfortunate deaths.

    The emergence of the new sub-variant JN.1 of the virus is further complicating the situation, with 200 reported cases so far. Health experts attribute the rising infections to the winter season and the congregation of people in crowded areas during New Year celebrations.

    While the recovery rate remains high at 98.81%, concerns persist as active COVID-19 cases continue to rise, reaching 4394 across the country. The authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to safety protocols, including vaccination, to curb the spread of the virus and protect public health.

    Australia has confirmed their playing XI for the upcoming game, sticking with the same lineup as the last Test. Notably, this match marks David Warner’s farewell appearance in Australian colours. Scheduled in Sydney from 3rd to 7th January, this third Test comes with Australia already securing an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series.
