  • Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Announces Abdication in New Year’s Eve Speech After 52-Year Reign | world news

Copenhagen: After more than 50 years in power, Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II has unexpectedly declared she will step down early in 2024, according to CNN. During her annual New Year’s Eve address shown on Danish television, Margrethe, 83, announced that she would be handing over the crown to her son, Crown Prince Frederik.

She gave an example of her beliefs about the future — referencing a back operation she underwent in February 2023. “In two weeks time, I have been Queen of Denmark for 52 years. Such an amount will leave its mark on anybody–and also on me! The time takes its toll, and the number of ‘ailments’ increases. One cannot undertake as much as one managed in the past,” the queen said, according to CNN.

The Danish queen said that she underwent “extensive back surgery” in February this year and added, “Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me. Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future – whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation.” “I have decided that now is the right time,” she said.

“On 14th January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father–I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will hand over the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” the queen announced, according to CNN.

After King Frederik IX passed away on January 14, 1972, Queen Margrethe II assumed the throne. Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain in the previous year, Margrethe assumed the title of Europe’s longest-serving queen.

  • ISRO Rockets Into New Year: XPoSat Launch Today, Check Timing And More Here |

New Delhi: In a historic move, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch a space mission on January 1, deploying the PSLV-DL variant rocket carrying the X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) and 10 additional payloads. Previously, ISRO conducted space missions in January using its PSLV and GSLV rockets, but never on the inaugural day of the calendar year.

At 9.10 a.m. the Indian rocket PSLV-DL variant with the code PSLV-C58, standing 44.4-metre tall and weighing 260 ton, will blast off from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota, in Andhra Pradesh XPoSat weighing about 740 kg and 10 scientific payloads fixed to the PSLV Orbital Platform.

At about 21 minutes into its flight, the rocket will orbit XPoSat at an altitude of about 650 km. In its normal configuration, the PSLV is a four-stage/engine expendable rocket powered by solid and liquid fuels, alternatively, with six booster motors strapped onto the first stage to give higher thrust during the initial flight moments.

The ISRO has five types of PSLV rockets — Standard, Core Alone, XL, DL, and QL. The major difference between them is the number of strap-on boosters used which, in turn, largely depends on the weight of the satellites to be orbited.

The PSLV uses 6,4,2 solid rocket strap-on motors to augment the thrust provided by the first stage in PSLV-XL, QL & DL variants, respectively. However, strap-ons are not used in the core-alone version (PSLV-CA).
