According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cases of infection are increasing once again across the world due to the sub-variant JN.1 found in China recently. JN.1 spreading in India originates from the BA.2.86 sub-variant of the Omicron variant. There are 41 mutations in its spike protein. It is more dangerous than the previously found XBB.1.5 and HV.1 variants.
Its first case was reported on August 25 this year in Luxembourg, Europe. After this it also spread to England, Iceland, France and America. Now its cases have come to light in India. The central government has issued an advisory to the states saying that for early detection of cases, the states have been asked to regularly monitor patients suffering from influenza and respiratory diseases.
Is JN.1 more contagious?
JN.1 is considered infectious due to several mutations in the spike protein. Experts say that it is either more infectious or more capable of penetrating our immune system. The JN.1 variant is being held responsible for the increase in Corona cases in Singapore. According to the data, two weeks ago, an average of 1,532 new cases were being reported a day in Singapore, which has now increased to 8,006.
How dangerous is JN.1?
According to WHO, there is no evidence that JN.1 poses a greater risk to public health than other variants. Neither serious symptoms nor increase in deaths have been observed in patients infected with this variant. However, its infectiousness is high. According to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), JN.1 accounts for 15 to 29 percent of total new cases in the US.
What is the status of variant cases in India?
On December 8, a 78-year-old woman from Kerala was confirmed to be infected with the JN.1 variant. This was the first case of this variant in India. As of December 18, there were 1,828 infected patients of this variant in India and 4 people have also died in Kerala itself. As a precautionary measure, the Karnataka government has made it mandatory for people above 60 years of age to wear masks in public places.
