Sreejesh, who has been the goalkeeper of the Indian hockey team since 2006, has played more than 300 international matches in his entire career and played a key role in helping his team win two consecutive Olympic bronze medals.
Retirement was announced before Paris Olympics
Let us tell you that before the Paris Olympics, Sreejesh had announced that this competition would be his last international match for India. Today, before his last international match, he shared a heart-touching note on social media, in which he wrote – “Now that I am going to stand between the posts for the last time, my heart is swelling with gratitude and pride. This journey from a young boy lost in dreams to a person protecting India’s honor is nothing less than extraordinary.”
He said, “Today I am playing my last match for India. Every save of mine, every dive, every roar of the audience will always reverberate in my heart. Thank you India, for believing in me, for standing by me. This is not the end, this is the beginning of cherished memories. Guardians of dreams forever. Jai Hind.”
Hockey career of Sreejesh
Born in Ernakulam, Kerala, PR Sreejesh made his debut for India in the 2006 South Asian Games and since then he has been a strong wall of the Indian goal post. Sreejesh has played more than 300 international matches in his entire career and won the Asian Games gold medal twice with the Indian team. Sreejesh has played 4 Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024) for India in which he won bronze twice.
Sreejesh, who was the FIH Best Goalkeeper of the Year for two consecutive years, was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021. Apart from this, he managed to win India’s Best Goalkeeper of the Year award 3 times. After the retirement of Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Sreejesh, the Indian hockey team will miss a great goalkeeper for many years as it will be very difficult for any other player to reach the level of this legendary goalkeeper.
