Haripada Roy has been sentenced to death by a special POCSO court in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district for the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. The court categorized the crime as ‘rarest of rare’ and ordered Rs 5 lakh in compensation for the victim’s family. The girl was abducted from her home on September 29, 2023, while her father and uncle were away. After the girl went missing, the girl’s uncle filed a police complaint, and her body was found near a river. The autopsy report confirmed the causes of death as rape and strangulation. Separately, the Supreme Court has granted bail to an Uttarakhand man accused of religious conversion and cheating, noting the approval of the couple’s families for their marriage.
