Haripada Roy has been sentenced to death by a special POCSO court in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, for the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. The court deemed the case ‘rarest of rare,’ emphasizing the victim’s age. The court also mandated Rs 5 lakh in compensation for the victim’s family. The tragic incident occurred on September 29, 2023, when the girl was abducted from her residence. Her body was later found near a river, with the postmortem report confirming rape and strangulation. In other legal developments, the Supreme Court granted bail to an Uttarakhand man charged with religious conversion, acknowledging the couple’s marriage was supported by both families.
