Shillong: The police investigation into the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case saw a significant development as the court remanded five key suspects, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, to eight days of police custody. SP (City), East Khasi Hills, Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor, who also leads the SIT, confirmed the court’s decision. The accused, comprising Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Singh Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand, were brought back to the Shillong Sadar Police Station following the court appearance. The case revolves around the death of Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was found in a gorge near Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, on June 2. Raja and his wife, Sonam, were on their honeymoon in the state in May 2025 and had previously been reported missing. After the body’s discovery, Sonam was located near a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway. Sonam’s brother, Govind, has expressed strong conviction in his sister’s involvement, advocating for the harshest punishment. He has also publicly disavowed his family’s connection with Sonam. Kiran Raghuvanshi, Raja’s sister-in-law, mentioned Sonam’s use of two mobile phones for frequent messaging. The Superintendent of Police (SP), East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, stated that there is sufficient evidence suggesting Sonam’s involvement, but a definitive conclusion requires detailed interrogation of the suspects.
