NFC, the technology behind contactless interactions, has been updated with NFC Release 15. The upgrade, spearheaded by the NFC Forum, enhances the operational range from 0.5 cm to 2 cm, improving the user experience in various applications. This expansion in range will reduce the need for precise alignment when using NFC-enabled devices. The update not only increases the operating distance but also includes improvements that will benefit smaller devices like smartwatches and smartphones by making connections faster and more reliable. The new standard is slated to improve various sectors including public transport, wearables, automotive, and smartphones. The update also promotes sustainability by supporting NFC Digital Product Passport (DPP) standards, allowing for lifecycle tracking.
