Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, has indicated a strong likelihood of a meeting between President Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping taking place this year. This assertion was made during his visit to Kuala Lumpur, where he stated that the odds are favorable, considering the mutual interest in such an event. During the regional meetings, Rubio met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a meeting described as both positive and constructive. The leaders addressed ongoing trade tensions and geopolitical challenges in Asia. The US and China have experienced shifting trade dynamics, including tariff disputes, though negotiations have produced a trade framework. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to meet Chinese officials to continue talks, as the US seeks strategic stability and cooperation with China. Rubio’s trip to Kuala Lumpur was his first official visit to Asia as Secretary of State.
