India’s defense production witnessed an unprecedented surge during the fiscal year 2024-25, culminating in a record output. The total value of defense production reached 150,590 crore rupees. This figure marks an impressive 18% rise compared to the previous fiscal year and a remarkable 90% increase compared to the figures from the 2019-20 period. The Defense Minister announced this substantial achievement, commending the combined efforts of DPSUs, public sector enterprises, and private sector entities. The Defense Minister highlighted that this achievement underscores the continuous strengthening of India’s defense industrial infrastructure, terming it a clear indicator of the nation’s progress in this critical sector. He lauded the collaborative endeavors, recognizing the milestone as a ‘historic achievement.’ He emphasized that the growth in defense production is a clear signal of the robust expansion of India’s defense industrial base. Public sector undertakings and DPSUs contributed significantly, accounting for 77% of the total output, while the private sector’s share rose to 23% from 21% in the previous year. The growth was driven by policy reforms, the facilitation of business operations, and the emphasis on indigenous production. During the current year, DPSUs experienced a 16% increase in production, and the private sector demonstrated a notable 28% growth. Defense exports have also reached a new peak, totaling 23,622 crore rupees, exceeding the previous year’s figures by 2,539 crore rupees. The government is focused on reducing dependence on imports, with a vision to develop a defense industry that fulfills India’s requirements while also establishing a global presence. In the fiscal year 2024-25, defense production hit an all-time high of 1,50,590 crore rupees, an 18% increase from 1.27 lakh crore rupees in the previous fiscal year 2023-24. In 2019-20, the figure stood at 79,071 crore rupees, demonstrating a substantial 90% increase over a five-year period.
