Russia is intensifying its military operations in regions Putin seeks to incorporate into Russia. Reports indicate that Putin has communicated to Trump his desire for the acceptance of Russian control over these areas as a path to peace. The aim is a permanent resolution to the conflict, potentially involving the transfer of disputed Ukrainian territories. This plan faces obstacles, as European countries are pushing for security guarantees for Ukraine, and Zelensky has reiterated his commitment to avoiding territorial compromises.
Russia’s focus is on regions like Donetsk, where it currently holds 88% of the territory, and Luhansk, where it controls 75%. It also seeks control over Zaporizhzhia (74%), Kherson (71%), Sumy (68%), and Kharkiv (50%). These regions are notable for their significant Russian-speaking populations, which provides a basis for Russian claims.
The Washington meetings made it clear that Putin has no plans to give up these six regions. Zelensky’s discussions with Trump have not yielded any concessions on Putin’s terms. The potential for a settlement aligns with Russia’s conditions, and there is no indication that Russia is in a hurry to end the conflict.
Russia opposes the deployment of NATO troops, especially as France has suggested sending its forces to Ukraine. Dmitry Medvedev criticized France’s stance and emphasized that Russia would not accept the deployment of NATO troops. Trump’s proposals to lift sanctions on Putin’s inner circle are linked to a ceasefire agreement.
