Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra in Ranchi, a well-regarded institution in Jharkhand, was the scene of a violent attack on Wednesday night. An MBA student was harassed by an unidentified person who entered the campus. When the student resisted, the attacker used a blade, causing injury.
The injured student received immediate medical care at a nursing home. The incident sparked outrage, and students initiated a protest within the campus, which continued despite attempts from the college administration and local police to resolve the situation.
Students have announced a class boycott for Thursday to protest the attack, refusing to attend classes. The BIT OP police are investigating the matter and interviewing the victim to gather information. The harassment and subsequent assault took place late Wednesday night while the student was walking on campus.
The unknown assailant entered the campus and began harassing the student. Upon resistance, the attacker used a blade causing injury. Police are examining CCTV footage from BIT Mesra to identify the attacker.
BIT Mesra was founded in 1955 by industrialist BM Birla. The institute has deemed university status from the UGC and is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and the National Board of Accreditation.
President Droupadi Murmu attended the platinum jubilee celebrations of BIT Mesra on February 15th of this year. She inaugurated an exhibition about the college’s 70-year academic journey and inspected science and technology exhibits. She also interacted with BIT Mesra students.
