Ahead of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, the Indian cricket community is taken aback by the retirement of Gouher Sultana. The experienced cricketer, known for her contributions to the team, has decided to step away from international cricket. Sultana’s announcement marks the end of her playing career, though her last appearance for the Indian team was in 2014, making her absence from the squad for 11 years.
Sultana debuted in ODIs against Pakistan in May 2008. Her ODI stats include 66 wickets in 50 matches at an average of 19.39, with three instances of taking four wickets in a match. In the T20 format, she played 37 matches, claiming 29 wickets at an average of 26.27. Sultana also participated in the Women’s Premier League but did not take any wickets in the four matches she played.
Taking to social media, Sultana expressed her sentiments regarding retirement. “Smiling goodbye to cricket,” she wrote. “After years of wearing the Indian jersey with pride, the time has come to reflect on the emotional journey. I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. I’m honored to have represented India at the highest level. Thank you to teammates, coaches, selectors, and support staff.” She added, “Cricket will always be a part of me, even if my career as a player is over. I’m eager to continue to contribute to the sport, to inspire, guide and serve the game in new ways. This isn’t a retirement; it is the close of a golden chapter.”
