Urban Indian Women’s Safety Concerns Highlighted in New Report

The NARI 2025 report presents a concerning overview of women’s safety in urban India. The study, which involved a survey of 12,770 women across 31 states, revealed that nearly 40% reported feeling unsafe in urban areas. The report, conducted in 2024, also found that about 7% of women aged 18-24 experienced harassment. Delhi and Kolkata were identified as the least safe cities, while Mumbai and several other cities were recognized as safer. Common forms of harassment included staring, catcalling, and physical contact. The study indicated that issues such as inadequate infrastructure, poor lighting, and ineffective public transport contribute to the problem. In addition, the report highlighted that only a small percentage of women reported harassment incidents to the authorities, and a large number were unaware of POSH policies in their offices.
