In a move set to transform highway travel, India is set to introduce its first toll plaza that eliminates the need for vehicles to stop. This initiative is a collaboration between the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL), and ICICI Bank. The project will begin at the Choryasi toll plaza on NH-48 in Gujarat, with plans to expand to other locations.
During the signing ceremony at NHAI headquarters, officials confirmed that the system will utilize Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology. This technology employs high-performance RFID readers and ANPR cameras to automatically deduct tolls from FASTag accounts and vehicle registrations, allowing vehicles to pass through uninterrupted. This will significantly reduce traffic congestion, save travel time, and lower fuel consumption, contributing to reduced pollution. Additionally, it will enhance transparency in toll collection, modernize India’s national highway network, making it smarter and more efficient. The system will also be introduced at the Gharaunda toll plaza in Haryana.
NHAI plans to roll out this technology across 25 toll plazas in the fiscal year 2025-26, further advancing its commitment to technological advancements in highway infrastructure. This new tolling system is designed to be more user-friendly, efficient and transparent.
