Protests have flared in Nepal following the government’s ban on popular social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and X. The demonstrations, largely driven by Gen-Z, have led to confrontations, including an attempt to breach the parliament building in Kathmandu. Tragically, one individual lost their life during clashes with law enforcement. A curfew has been implemented in various parts of Kathmandu, turning the city into a scene of heightened security.
Ashirwad Raj, a student involved in the protests, described the situation, highlighting the impact of the curfew. He stated that they were engaged in peaceful demonstrations before facing a forceful response from security forces. Raj expressed deep sorrow over the injuries and death of a fellow protestor. He underscored the significance of the moment, as the government has blocked access to 26 social media applications, and stated their determination to make their voices heard.
Raj drew parallels to youth movements in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, emphasizing their desire to create positive change. He also addressed attempts to sabotage the protest, noting that some individuals tried to infiltrate the demonstration. He stated that the protesters were carrying Indian flags and they aimed to reach the parliament.
Reports indicate that large crowds gathered in Kathmandu, pushing through barriers and surrounding the parliament. The police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. According to Muktiram Rijal, the curfew would be in place until 10 PM local time.
