The search for an interim Prime Minister in Nepal has led to the emergence of several names, including Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu, who initially garnered support from Gen-Z protesters. However, the movement’s backing shifted to retired Chief Justice Sushila Karki, creating division. Harka Raj Rai, known as Harka Sampang, the independent mayor of Dharan, has now been put forward by a new group of Gen-Z supporters. Sampang, elected mayor in 2022, has become known for his efforts to serve the public directly, rejecting preferential treatment. Before entering politics, Sampang worked as a migrant worker in Afghanistan. Upon his return to Dharan, he focused on improving his hometown, tackling issues such as waste management and bus schedules. Sampang has criticized Balendra Shah, accusing him of lacking courage during the protests. The Nepal Army has also pushed for a clear leader amid the transition.
