A concerning incident at SECL’s Chirmiri open cast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur (MCB) district on Monday saw three workers, including two women, injured due to an explosion. The blast occurred during preparations for a scheduled blasting operation, between 2 pm and 3 pm. Sources suggest a group of seven to eight workers was engaged in placing explosives when the detonation happened prematurely. This unexpected event sent flying debris, impacting workers and vehicles present in the vicinity. The injured were swiftly transported to the SECL regional hospital in Kurasia, Chirmiri, where they are receiving treatment for minor injuries. Hospital officials confirm the workers are stable and out of danger, with anticipated early discharge. An investigation has been initiated by SECL to pinpoint the exact cause of the blast. While initial assessments point towards a possible technical malfunction, the inquiry will also examine equipment integrity, operational protocols, and potential human error. Safety protocols are under review, and operations at the affected mine site are on hold pending a thorough safety evaluation. The site is approximately 300 km from Raipur, the state’s capital.
