TLP Protests Turn Violent in Lahore, Route to Islamabad Blocked

A large-scale protest by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in Lahore on Friday escalated into widespread violence, causing significant disruption and injuries. The party’s ‘Gaza March,’ aimed at reaching Islamabad, was met with resistance from police. TLP chief Saad Rizvi alleged that Punjab police actions resulted in the deaths of at least 11 party workers and injured over two dozen, also claiming that injured protesters were denied medical care. Police have not confirmed these fatalities. The march began after Friday prayers, with thousands of TLP supporters gathering and proceeding with sticks and other implements. Security forces deployed tear gas and erected barriers at strategic points to prevent the protesters from advancing. Despite these measures, the TLP activists managed to break through several checkpoints. Reports indicated that some protesters disrupted public transport infrastructure, including the Orange Line Metro, and engaged in stone-pelting, leading to dozens of police officers being injured. Videos circulating online appeared to show protesters utilizing heavy machinery, such as cranes, purportedly taken from government agencies. The demonstrations peaked near Azadi Chowk, where police vehicles sustained damage. While authorities confirmed numerous officer injuries, the TLP reiterated its claims of fatalities from police firing. In response to the unrest, authorities placed 110 TLP activists in custody for alleged violence and vandalism, charges that the party disputes. The government also implemented road blockades leading to Islamabad and restricted internet access in an effort to contain the situation.
