India’s defense capabilities are poised for a significant upgrade as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) finalizes plans for the Astra Mark 2 air-to-air missile. The DRDO has proposed extending the missile’s range to over 200 kilometers, a substantial leap from previous iterations. The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to acquire around 700 of these advanced missiles, which will be compatible with its Sukhoi and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) fighter jets. This strategic enhancement in Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat capabilities is designed to bolster India’s aerial defense posture. The development reflects India’s commitment to indigenous defense manufacturing and its ambition to maintain technological superiority in air warfare. The expanded range will allow IAF pilots to engage enemy aircraft from much safer distances, a critical advantage in modern aerial combat scenarios.
