The triumphant return of Uma Chetry, Assam’s first-ever representative at the ICC Women’s World Cup, has unfortunately been marred by a controversy surrounding her welcome home. Chetry, a talented wicketkeeper-batter, arrived in Guwahati carrying the pride of India, yet allegedly received no official reception from state government representatives at the airport. This has sparked outrage and a heated debate about recognizing sporting achievements.
Eyewitness accounts and statements from the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union claim that it was only their members and a few ardent fans who greeted Chetry with traditional garlands and the Assamese ‘gamosa’. The union president voiced strong disappointment, drawing parallels with the grand receptions accorded to other cricketers. “If our members had not come, not a single person would have been there for her to welcome,” he alleged, emphasizing the historical significance of Chetry’s World Cup participation.
The political arena quickly responded, with opposition figures condemning the state government’s handling of the situation. A prominent Member of Parliament from Assam criticized the ruling party, highlighting Chetry’s journey from a modest background to achieving international acclaim. He expressed dismay that an athlete who placed Assam and the Northeast on the global sporting map was not officially celebrated upon her return.
Responding to the criticism, officials from the BCCI and the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) provided explanations. The BCCI Secretary cited logistical challenges, including last-minute changes to player travel schedules and the need to avoid public celebrations due to a period of mourning for a renowned singer. The ACA President stated that they were not provided with advance notice of Chetry’s arrival, which precluded them from making airport arrangements.
In her own words, Chetry maintained a composed demeanor, stating she felt no offense and understood that officials might have had prior commitments. She emphasized the personal joy and significance of her World Cup experience. Her coach reminisced about her early struggles and unwavering dedication, expressing a wish for her to receive the grand recognition she deserved.
In an effort to address the situation, the state’s Sports Minister later felicitated Chetry, and official channels acknowledged her achievements. Meanwhile, her village embraced her with joyous celebrations, recognizing her as a symbol of hope and success originating from a region often affected by natural challenges.
