Raipur is the scene of a significant counter-terrorism operation, as Chhattisgarh’s ATS has taken two underage individuals into custody for suspected ties to a Pakistan-based ISIS network. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma revealed that this marks the state’s inaugural case of its kind and affirmed ongoing efforts to uncover any further connections.
Sharma detailed how the two youths were allegedly directed by ISIS operatives in Pakistan, exploiting social media platforms with counterfeit accounts. He elaborated that the minors were exposed to and subsequently influenced by extremist materials, aiming to sway others on Instagram. Their online activity revealed substantial access to information and active engagement under the ISIS identity.
Legal action has been initiated against the minors under the UAPA. Sharma stressed the proactive measures being taken, including enhancing the ATS’s presence in key urban centers and throughout Chhattisgarh, to identify and neutralize such threats. He indicated a forthcoming proposal to the Chief Minister for an expanded ATS force. Citizens are encouraged to be vigilant and report any anti-national content circulating online.
Police sources indicate that the detained minors were active online, acting on behalf of ISIS. The Pakistan-based module was reportedly using Instagram to reach vulnerable Indian teens, aiming to radicalize them, incite anti-India sentiment, and propagate violent extremism. Investigations revealed that these handlers systematically radicalized the boys within Instagram group chats, encouraging them to share ISIS propaganda. There is also evidence suggesting the minors were being prepared to set up an ISIS cell within Chhattisgarh. The detentions were a result of extensive cyber monitoring by the ATS and allied agencies.
