Eleven people, including three children aged 3, 12, and 16, have been killed and 14 wounded in a devastating shooting at a Pretoria hostel. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the fatalities and injuries stemming from an early Saturday morning attack at the Saulsville Hostel in Atteridgeville. The perpetrators, described as three unknown gunmen, reportedly entered the premises, which was operating as an illegal shebeen, and began shooting randomly at patrons. The incident, which took place around 4:15 am, was reported to the police nearly two hours later. Law enforcement has deployed forensic and ballistics teams to the scene and initiated a comprehensive manhunt for the suspects. Officials also highlighted the pervasive issue of illegal liquor trading, revealing that thousands of unlicensed outlets have been closed and numerous arrests made in recent months. This event casts a shadow over Pretoria, mirroring the rising gun violence and gang-related incidents that have plagued cities like Cape Town, prompting serious concerns about public safety.
