The ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ movement, synonymous with girl child empowerment, celebrated its 11th anniversary on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi used X to laud the strides made, highlighting how daughters of India are consistently achieving groundbreaking feats across sectors.
In his post, the PM recalled the launch date: ‘In a country that worships daughters as Lakshmi, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao began 11 years ago today. It’s profoundly gratifying to see India’s daughters establishing fresh records daily in every domain.’ A Sanskrit couplet followed, poetically equating one daughter’s merit to ten sons’ legacy.
Introduced in 2015 amid concerns over skewed sex ratios, the scheme—entirely government-funded—seeks to prevent female foeticide, secure girls’ survival, and advance their education. Its district-level execution has orchestrated multi-sectoral alliances, reshaping attitudes towards gender equity.
Data validates the impact: Birth sex ratio improved from 918 (2014-15) to 929 (2024-25) per HIMIS, while girls’ secondary gross enrolment ratio rose from 75.51% to 78% according to UDISE.
These numbers tell a story of empowerment, evident in women’s triumphs from classrooms to corporate boardrooms, sports fields to space missions. As Modi champions this cause, the campaign stands as a testament to collective action, promising sustained growth and gender-balanced prosperity for India.
