Equality in the classroom is under threat, and Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta isn’t mincing words. In a Thursday letter to LG VK Saxena, he exposes the Directorate of Education’s discriminatory seniority system that shortchanges women teachers.
By splitting lists by gender, the department ensures men get fast-tracked promotions to elite roles—PGT, Vice Principals, Principals—leaving women in limbo for years. Gupta bolstered his argument with a January 26, 2025, petition from Udita Society President Niti Bharara Oberoi.
The courts are involved, with Delhi High Court overseeing proceedings. The department’s counsel revealed on May 1, 2025, that list mergers are being pondered. LG’s office advised engaging the standing counsel and stakeholders for a proper overhaul.
Alarmingly, promotions from PGT to Vice Principal are advancing on these biased lists, denying women their due. Gupta calls for LG intervention to mandate an immediate halt to gender discrimination and block any such moves until unified lists are in place.
He stresses that women must receive their due justice, undeterred by bureaucratic inertia. This urgent request aims to safeguard teachers’ trust in the system.
Beyond the immediate fix, Gupta’s advocacy raises vital questions about equity in government jobs. If acted upon, it could pave the way for inclusive policies, empowering women educators and strengthening Delhi’s educational framework for the future.
