Tuesday’s Rajya Sabha session featured a robust appeal from MP Satnam Singh Sandhu for elevating Chandigarh International Airport’s status. On behalf of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, he sought immediate launch of flights to Vancouver, London, and Singapore to capitalize on existing infrastructure.
Limited to Dubai and Abu Dhabi internationals, the airport idles at 3.5-4 million passengers against a 7-million potential. Sandhu envisioned a connectivity revolution: easier access for NRIs, professionals, and exporters, reducing reliance on distant metros like Delhi.
His blueprint included Point of Call status for broader airline participation and ramped-up cargo ops to turbocharge Punjab’s farm produce shipments. “This isn’t just about flights; it’s about livelihoods,” he emphasized, appealing for prompt government action.
Amid praise for national aviation strides—157 new airports in a decade—Sandhu noted Punjab’s gains: Chandigarh and Amritsar internationals, plus domestic expansions. He warmly recalled PM Modi’s Guru Ravidas Jayanti visit, announcing Adampur’s rename and Halwara’s dedication.
“Progress gratifies, yet ambition drives us further,” Sandhu concluded. This demand signals a maturing regional economy ready for global integration via smarter aviation policy.
