Marking a new chapter in educational diplomacy, India has granted Mahatma Gandhi Scholarships to 300 high-achieving students across Sri Lanka’s 25 districts. The Colombo Education Ministry ceremony was attended by PM Harini Amarasuriya, Deputy Minister Madura Senewiratne, and Acting High Commissioner Satyanjal Pandey.
Through a rigorous merit-cum-means selection—top six per district—recipients receive 2,500 LKR monthly. The event consolidated awards for 2021-2024, amplifying its impact.
Grateful for India’s support, PM Amarasuriya congratulated the scholars and invoked Gandhi’s philosophy, inspiring them to advance his humanitarian vision.
Pandey portrayed the scholarship as an enduring emblem, expecting recipients to excel scholarly while disseminating Gandhi’s noble thoughts lifelong.
Complementing this, India offers 210 annual scholarships in engineering, tech, arts, sciences, and ayurveda, alongside 400+ ITEC slots. Strategic agreements from 2024 (1,500 civil servants training MoU) and 2025 (700 capacity programs) signal deepening commitment.
As these young minds gear up, the program embodies Gandhi’s dream of empowered youth driving societal harmony.
