Anticipation builds in Kolkata as BJP signals an imminent announcement of its Rajya Sabha contender from West Bengal, expected in the first week of March. Late April will see five Upper House seats from the state open up, where TMC’s assembly numbers guarantee four wins, handing BJP a narrow path to one.
Party confidants disclose that three names are in the final reckoning. B-town legend Mithun Chakraborty stands out, alongside Locket Chatterjee, the ex-MP who pivoted from cinema to corridors of power. Dr. Ashok Lahiri, respected economist and current Balurghat legislator, is also in contention.
The development unfolds against a backdrop of fiery exchanges. BJP state president Dilip Ghosh unleashed on CM Mamata Banerjee, decrying her government’s corruption-riddled record. Addressing journalists, he invoked active probes into financial malfeasance and subversive activities.
‘Corruption cases abound, coupled with NIA-tracked anti-national deeds and ED strikes,’ Ghosh noted. He lambasted Banerjee for personally showing up at raided IPAC premises, viewing it as a desperate veil over major irregularities. ‘Fast-track these cases for justice,’ he pressed.
Ghosh highlighted widespread citizen dismay with administrative shortcomings. ‘The public awaits the moment to deliver its verdict,’ he prophesied. BJP’s Rajya Sabha push, merging celebrity appeal with expertise, promises to stir Bengal’s volatile politics further as alliances and accusations collide.
