In a bold stride towards technological independence, India will introduce PARAM-2, its indigenous 17 billion parameter AI model, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. This BharatGen project embodies the nation’s vision for AI that resonates with its multilingual, multicultural fabric.
DST-backed and trained on expansive Bharat Data Sagar resources, PARAM-2 employs a Mixture-of-Experts design to navigate complex tasks across India’s 22 scheduled languages with precision.
As per Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan of IIT Bombay, this launch symbolizes years of synergy among researchers, public institutions, and private sectors, cementing India’s prowess in frontier AI development.
Diverging from proprietary global tools, BharatGen positions PARAM-2 as a public good—freely adaptable for offline use in critical sectors like judiciary, healthcare, banking, and academia. This fosters unwavering trust through data control and openness.
Originating from the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems with 235 crore initial outlay, the program surges ahead with 900 crore from the IndiaAI Mission. PARAM-2 paves the way for a future where AI amplifies India’s democratic ethos, driving inclusive growth and administrative efficiency.
