The Election Commission of India’s annual Sports Week 2026 exploded into action Monday at the Commonwealth Games Sports Complex in New Delhi. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar led the charge, flagging off the opening ‘Run for Democracy’ race and igniting a week of competitive excitement.
Kumar passionately connected sportsmanship to democratic ideals: ‘Transparency and fair play in games are identical to what strengthens our elections. Sports are vital for health – let’s all get involved.’ He motivated the athletes to uphold sportsmanship while drawing strength from democratic ethos.
The flagship 100-meter women’s sprint launched the event, with the CEC waving the green flag. This edition’s motto, ‘Harmony on the Field, Strength in Democracy,’ powerfully unites athletic cooperation with civic fortitude.
383 participants, 72 of whom are women, will battle it out in 43 categories across seven disciplines: chess, carrom, table tennis, badminton, cricket, football, and athletics. Expect intense 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m races segmented by age and gender.
The ECI Recreation Club’s brainchild promotes interpersonal harmony and spirited rivalry among employees. As the week progresses, it will undoubtedly create lasting memories, reinforcing how shared victories on the field bolster the greater pursuit of democratic excellence.
