The White Ferns bid a heartfelt goodbye to Lauren Down, who has retired from international cricket after a commendable six-year stint. The 30-year-old batter retire following 48 caps since 2018.
Her ODI ledger boasts 486 runs in 35 matches, with three half-centuries topping out at 90. T20Is added 93 runs across 13 appearances. Elite fielding complemented her batting, making her indispensable.
In her statement, Down was reflective: ‘White Ferns was family; representing NZ was profound. Auckland, my coaches, and mates—your support was everything.’ Her 2011 domestic debut led to 202 matches and 1,496 T20 runs for Hearts, a franchise record territory.
Ben Sawyer, NZ head coach, celebrated her. ‘Outstanding Lauren always maximized her potential in our setup. Her passion shone through. Best wishes ahead.’
Injury woes peaked in 2022 with thumb trouble excluding her from World Cup and Commonwealth duties, yet 2023 saw her bounce back.
Down’s departure signifies transition for NZ women. Her story of triumph over adversity inspires, as cricket embraces her next chapter.
