Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced deep sorrow over the heartbreaking death of Shillong’s Lok Sabha representative Dr. Ricky A.J. Singkon, who died unexpectedly after collapsing while playing football. The incident has triggered an unprecedented wave of tributes across Meghalaya and beyond.
Posting on X, PM Modi stated, ‘Painfully saddened by Shillong MP Dr. Ricky A.J. Singkon’s demise. The people of Meghalaya will eternally remember his devoted service. Prayers for his family, friends, and supporters. Om Shanti.’ Modi’s condolences resonated with a state in collective shock.
The VPP MP’s life cut short at 42 came on the heels of his blockbuster 2024 election win, where he demolished three-term Congress MP Vincent H. Pala with a 3.7 lakh-vote margin. This feat redefined Meghalaya’s electoral map, showcasing Singkon’s mass appeal.
Thursday evening’s events were gut-wrenching: Singkon slumped during the game, prompting friends to ferry him to Mawiong Community Health Centre. Doctor shortage there led to a referral, landing him at Jaiaw’s premier Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital.
Medical staff mounted a heroic effort, but Singkon was pronounced dead at 8:42 PM. The hospital overflowed with mourners as CM Conrad Sangma, Deputy Preston Tinsong, VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, and peers arrived to honor the fallen leader.
Singkon, a former physician, brought medical precision to politics, championing healthcare reforms and anti-corruption drives. His parliamentary interventions on Northeast development earned bipartisan respect. Now, his absence looms large over Meghalaya’s legislative agenda.
Family, supporters, and the VPP faithful are devastated. With state elections looming, Singkon’s death poses strategic challenges. Yet, his story of triumph over entrenched power remains a rallying cry. Meghalaya bids farewell to a son who served with unmatched passion.
