Two new cases of measles have been identified in Auckland, originating from international travel. The patients shared a household and arrived on Singapore Airlines flight SQ281 on February 17. Consequently, Health New Zealand has initiated contact tracing at Auckland International Airport and Waitakere Hospital. These cases appear just weeks after the end of a previous outbreak, reminding the public that measles remains a persistent global threat. The disease is characterized by a red, blotchy rash and high fever, and it can be fatal for young children. Historically, measles claimed millions of lives until the introduction of the vaccine in the 1960s. Despite its effectiveness, over 100,000 deaths were recorded worldwide in 2023 due to gaps in vaccination coverage. Public health experts stress that maintaining high vaccination rates is critical to preventing domestic outbreaks from imported infections.
