Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia unleashed sharp criticism against BSNL’s handling of a director’s personal travel plans, branding the VIP frills as ‘unacceptable’ and rule-breaking. A formal show-cause notice targets the official involved.
Leaked documents from Prayagraj detailed an over-the-top setup for Director Vivek Bansal’s visit, mobilizing 50 personnel for 21 tasks across two days. Highlights included river cruises, spiritual temple tours, and immersive rituals at Triveni Sangam, with bespoke kits containing towels, herbal oils, grooming tools, and intimate apparel.
The agenda extended to custom suits, candid photography, chauffeured rides stocked with hydration, confectionery, savory snacks, and beverages—turning a private outing into a state-like affair.
Once exposed on digital platforms, the revelations fueled public ire, resulting in the trip’s hasty scrapping. Scindia told journalists: ‘I’ve addressed media concerns—it’s improper, defies traditions, and shocks me profoundly. No room for this.’
The director has seven days to respond, with disciplinary steps assured. Scindia reiterated that elite indulgences are relics of the past for public servants.
Against BSNL’s backdrop of staggering Rs 1,300 crore quarterly deficits, this fiasco amplifies calls for fiscal prudence and oversight. The government’s decisive response aims to restore public trust in efficient resource use.
