From devastation to development: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan unveils phase one of the Wayanad Model Township Sunday, addressing the fallout from July 30, 2024’s killer landslides. Four villages vanished, over 200 perished, 32 remain missing, and assets were obliterated.
On 49 hectares acquired legally for 44.33 crore under disaster act, a 299 crore haven emerges for displaced families. First up: 178 homes built swiftly, model in 105 days. Each 1,000 sq ft sanctuary offers two beds, baths, living-dining, study, kitchen, work area, sit-out – all fortified against nature’s fury.
Power setup dazzles with three-phase, efficient fans, LEDs, and AC/inverter prep. Beyond homes, 11.42 km roads, bridges, sub-surface lines, drainage, sewage treatment, 100,000-litre reservoirs, surveillance cams, and waste management ensure seamless living.
The green edge? 2 kW solar roofs with net metering per house, birthing a solar powerhouse in Wayanad. Phases ahead bring health posts, community spots, kids’ centers, markets, theaters, parks, and sports turf.
Kerala’s vision transforms grief into growth, delivering eco-smart, self-sufficient habitats that honor the lost while securing the future for Wayanad’s survivors.
