CHENNAI – A landmark moment for women’s healthcare arrived Sunday as Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated an expansive new maternity and surgical block at the Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Chepak.
This Rs 32.32 crore project, sprawling across 66,658 square feet on three floors, injects 100 additional beds loaded with futuristic medical tools to uplift maternal and neonatal services in Chennai.
From the ground floor’s sophisticated operating room, blood unit, and lab to the upper levels’ labor observation areas, delivery rooms, recovery units, baby care zones, and isolation facilities, every inch is optimized for excellence.
Standout elements encompass minimally invasive laparoscopic ops, continuous surveillance systems, recovery suites, and tailored anesthesia services for pain-free experiences.
Stalin’s inspection revealed officials’ focus on slashing complications, bolstering safety, and handling the influx of patients effectively.
The need was urgent: 2025’s 170,731 outpatient visits and 132,886 inpatients led to 6,265 vaginal deliveries, 2,730 cesareans, 4,323 major surgeries, 8,418 minors, and 1,200 sterilizations.
Accompanied by Health Minister Ma. Subramaniam, MP Dayanidhi Maran, and health chief P. Senthil Kumar, the event underscores Tamil Nadu’s drive toward robust, equitable healthcare infrastructure for mothers and infants.
