With general elections looming on March 5, Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has issued an impassioned plea from Kathmandu for every eligible voter to step up. She portrayed the ballot as a golden opportunity to build a secure and thriving future for generations.
Dismissing passive views of voting, Karki stressed its profound impact: ‘It’s your blueprint for tomorrow—not just a mark on paper.’ Her government rose from the ashes of the ‘Gen-Z’ movement, which unseated KP Sharma Oli in September, navigating a six-month sprint to these crucial elections.
Proud of stabilizing the ship of state, Karki highlighted how her team quelled uncertainties to deliver on electoral timelines. This backdrop amplifies her message of unity and purposeful participation.
However, she didn’t shy from addressing perils like social media hoaxes flooding campaigns. ‘Don’t fall prey; demand truth,’ she advised, while signaling strict enforcement against purveyors of deceit.
Parliament’s 275 seats hang in the balance: 165 through winner-takes-all district races, 110 via party-list proportionality. Sixty-seven parties have nominated 3,406 candidates, setting the stage for a dynamic showdown.
In closing, Karki envisioned high engagement as the key to political equilibrium and national flourishing. Nepal stands at a crossroads, and the electorate’s voice will echo through its future chapters.
