Amit Shah, Union Home and Cooperation Minister, marked a new era for India’s decennial census by unveiling digital tools and mascots Pragati and Vikas in New Delhi. This soft launch paves the way for a fully digital Census 2027, enhancing efficiency nationwide.
The process officially commenced via a gazette on June 16, 2025, setting the stage for the planet’s most expansive census in two phases. Self-enumeration debuts, letting people submit details digitally beforehand.
A fortified web portal supports entries in 16 languages, issuing unique IDs for field verification by enumerators, thus optimizing the entire workflow.
Spotlight fell on C-DAC-developed platforms: HLBC web application, HLO app, self-enumeration portal, and management system. These integrate planning, collection, and surveillance for unparalleled transparency.
Pragati and Vikas, endearing icons of female and male progress, echo India’s 2047 developed-nation goal with emphasis on shared roles. They’ll bridge information gaps, making census awareness accessible and fun.
Expect house listing from April to September 2026, then February 2027 population tally capturing demographics, socio-economics. 3 million-strong teams will use app-based tools for door-to-door precision.
Technology at the core ensures a secure, inclusive census, vital for informed decision-making and national advancement.
