A proud moment for Nepal: Ram Prasad Suwedi, Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, has been elected Chairperson of the WTO’s Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE) by acclamation at the March 11 General Council meeting. He will serve a full year, steering vital discussions on trade and sustainability.
The Foreign Ministry’s X post hailed the selection, emphasizing its relevance as Nepal transitions beyond LDC status toward fuller global trade participation. This role amplifies Nepal’s diplomatic footprint, enabling proactive engagement with WTO partners on integration strategies.
Central to the CTE’s mission is probing trade policies’ ecological ramifications and environmental strategies’ trade implications. It nurtures dialogue on sustainable trade innovations, climate mitigation via commerce, and policies that decouple growth from environmental degradation.
Suwedi’s agenda may tackle hotspots like carbon border adjustments, e-waste trade regulations, and incentives for organic agriculture exports. Representing a climate frontline state, Nepal under his guidance can champion adaptive measures, such as technology sharing for green manufacturing and capacity-building for vulnerable economies.
The appointment validates Nepal’s rising stature in multilateral arenas. Suwedi’s tenure promises to invigorate the CTE, potentially yielding frameworks that embed sustainability into WTO operations. This could yield long-term gains for Nepal’s economy while advancing collective planetary goals, exemplifying balanced progress in an interconnected world.
