  • Why Ganga Dirtier Despite Spending Rs 20,000 Crore: Congress Questions PM Modi |

New Delhi: Congress launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and bombarded him with questions regarding his current Lok Sabha constituency as he filed his nomination for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi today.

On the day PM Modi filed his nomination from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh took on the microblogging site ‘X’ and said that the outgoing PM must answer for his “failures” in his constituency.

“Today’s questions: After spending Rs 20,000 crore, why has the Ganga gotten dirtier? Why has the PM abandoned the Varanasi villages he had “adopted”? Why is the PM determined to destroy Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy in Varanasi,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.

Ramesh said when he came to Varanasi in 2014, Modi had said “Maa Ganga ne mujhe bulaya hain” and promised to purify the waters of the Holy Ganga, but soon after coming to power, rebranded the existing Operation Ganga as Namami Gange.

“Ten years later, the ‘Namami Gange’ project has cost the exchequer more than Rs. 20,000 crore. Here are the results: the number of Polluted River Stretches has increased from 51 to 66, 71% of monitoring stations have reported dangerous bacteria at up to 40 times more than safe levels, and antibiotic resistant bacteria have now been found in the waters.”

“Where has the 20,000 crore in taxpayer money gone? How much has been siphoned off in corruption and mismanagement? How can the people of Varanasi trust a man who has given a jumla even to Ma Ganga,” the Congress leader asked.

He also said outside the city of Varanasi lie eight villages that the PM had “adopted”, but a March 2024 ground report found that despite big promises of “smart schools”, health facilities and housing, the villages have seen absolutely no progress in 10 years.

Domri village has almost no pucca housing, he said, adding Nagepur village has extremely shoddy roads.

Dalit communities in Jogapur and Jayapur have no toilets and no water, and the flagship Nal Se Jal Scheme seems to have missed Parampur village entirely, he claimed.

“The condition of Mr. Modi’s adopted villages tells us a lot about his sense of duty, or lack thereof, towards serving his constituents. Why has the PM abandoned his “adopted” villages? Is this the true face of “Modi ki guarantee”,” he asked.

Ramesh also alleged that “It is well known that the outgoing PM’s ideology is that of Godse, not Gandhi”.

“He has taken his malicious hatred of the Father of our Nation to the extent of destroying the Sarwa Sewa Sangh, started by Acharya Vinobha Bhave, and associated with personalities like Dr Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Jayaprakash Narayan,” he said, adding it has been rendering extraordinary public service to the nation since 1955.

“It had been operating on 13 acres of land, close to the Varanasi Railway Station, for which it had full possession papers. It was evicted from its iconic campus in August 2023, and the land was taken over by the Indian Railways. Only one corner of the campus, occupied by the Gandhi Vidya Sansthan, remains untouched because it had already been captured by the RSS.

“Why does the PM persist in his hypocrisy of praising Gandhiji abroad, while destroying Gandhian institutions at home? Can he openly admit his admiration for Godse over Gandhi,” Ramesh asked.

PM Modi, the sitting MP and BJP’s candiatate from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh filed his nomination papers at the district magistrate’s office.  PM filed his nomination papers seeking a third consecutive term from the constituency and hoping to win with a record margin. Varanasi will go in for polling in the seventh and last phase of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1. The counting of the votes will be held on June 4.

  • Unrest In Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir: Security Forces’ Clash With Protesters Leaves 3 Dead, 6 Injured | world news

At least three people were killed and six others injured when security forces opened fire on protesters during clashes with paramilitary Rangers in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s capital Muzaffarabad, which has been rocked by protests over high wheat flour prices and inflated electricity bills, according to a media. report. The paramilitary Rangers, who had been called in to maintain law and order in the disputed region, were attacked as they were leaving, Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported.

The 19-vehicle convoy, which included five trucks, chose to leave the region through Kohala rather than Brarkot, a village bordering Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the report. As the convoy approached Muzaffarabad in a “charged atmosphere,” it was pelted with rocks near Shorran da Nakka village, prompting them to respond with tear gas and firing, according to the report.

After entering the city via the Western Bypass, the Rangers were met with rocks, prompting them to use tear gas and bullets. According to the report, the shelling was so intense that it left the entire neighborhood reeling.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a Pakistani Rs 23 billion subsidy for immediate release to the region yesterday, after protesters and the regional government failed to reach an agreement.

However, the government’s decision to provide the subsidy did not satisfy the region, according to the report.

Over 100 people, mostly police officers, were injured in Saturday’s clashes between police and activists of a rights movement in the disputed region, which resulted in the death of at least one police officer. Since Friday, there has also been a total strike in the area, which has stopped all activity.

Prior to the violence, a meeting between Prime Minister Sharif and the “prime minister” of the disputed region, Anwarul Haq, approved the release of Rs 23 billion from Pakistan for the region to use for wheat and power subsidies.

The 40kg flour subsidized rate has been reduced from Pakistani Rs 3,100 to Rs 2,000. A reduction in the electricity tariff was implemented, with units up to 100, 300, and over 300 units subject to rates of PKR 3, 5, and 6.

The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) is leading the protest, with traders at the forefront in most parts of the region demanding electricity at the region’s hydropower generation cost, subsidized wheat flour, and an end to the elite class’s privileges.

The JAAC led a long march to Muzaffarabad, the capital of PoK, on Monday, as the wheel-jam strike entered its fourth day.

The movement announced its march to Muzaffarabad after talks between the JAAC core committee and the region’s Chief Secretary, Dawood Bareach, ended in a stalemate.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed deep concern over the violent clashes between police and protesters on Sunday, saying that “absolutely no tolerance for taking the law into one’s own hands” should be maintained.

“I urge all parties to pursue a peaceful resolution of their demands. Despite the best efforts of detractors, the matter should be resolved soon,” he stated.

As part of his efforts to defuse tensions, President Asif Ali Zardari urged all stakeholders to use restraint and resolve issues through dialogue and mutual consultation.
