A SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru experienced a bizarre event when a passenger was accidentally locked inside the airplane’s lavatory for the entire flight. The airline has apologized and reportedly offered compensation, but the unusual circumstances have led to widespread interest.
The passenger was eventually rescued after the plane landed at Bengaluru airport. Ground crew and engineers quickly intervened to unlock the faulty toilet door. The incident happened on a Monday night when the Mumbai-Bengaluru flight was delayed by two hours, taking off at 2:10 AM rather than its scheduled departure time of 10:55 PM. The passenger, occupying seat 14D, entered the restroom soon after takeoff and was unable to exit due to a jammed door lock, causing a mid-flight issue.
Efforts by the passenger and crew to unlock the door were unsuccessful. The crew then opted to communicate with the distressed passenger via a handwritten note passed through a gap in the door, advising them to stay put until the plane landed in Bengaluru. The note’s image went viral, with social media users finding it amusing and commenting on the penmanship. The flight reached Bengaluru at about 3:45 AM. Engineers then opened the door. The airline has issued an apology and acknowledged the incident’s inconvenience.
