The cafe racer segment in India is about to welcome a new entrant on August 6th: the Triumph Thruxton 400. This motorcycle will be the third model in the 400cc lineup after the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, which have already gained recognition in the entry-level premium category. The addition of the Thruxton 400 promises to elevate the appeal of this range.
Developed in partnership with Bajaj Auto, the Thruxton 400 utilizes Triumph’s 400cc platform. Its launch is expected to position it as a direct competitor to models such as the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450.
Engine Performance
At its heart lies the 398cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, the same one powering the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X. In the existing models, this engine generates 39.5 bhp and 37.5 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox and a slip-and-assist clutch. The Thruxton may see some engine tuning to boost its sporty performance characteristics and improve throttle response.
Pricing Insights
The Triumph Speed 400 is priced at ₹2.40 lakh, and the Scrambler 400X at ₹2.65 lakh (ex-showroom). Based on its premium style and positioning, the Thruxton 400 is anticipated to be priced around ₹2.80 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the most expensive model in Triumph’s 400cc range in India.
Design Overview
Spy shots of the Triumph Thruxton 400 on social media reveal a design that is both retro and stylish, embodying a distinct British aesthetic. It features a front fairing with fighter jet influences, and likely a round LED headlight for a powerful appearance. The design includes low-set clip-on handlebars and rear-set foot pegs to facilitate a sporty riding posture, a key element for cafe racer motorcycles.
